Speaking from a provider's POV, yes you can be friends with someone you have a business arrangement with. This is a business just like any other, its just more intimate. Of course some are in it just for the money and don't wish to have anything to do with you other than BCD time, but there are others like me who tend to form bonds with certain gents that I "click" with.
How much a provider or hobbyist decides to reveal to each other is up to them. But, I have a few guys in KC and more in Omaha (homebase) that I consider my friends and could call if I ever needed.
