Memorial Day Weekend

Please Remember Y'all... this is NOT "National B-B-Q Weekend"
it IS in remembrance of the Fallen.

An estimated 1000+ people showed up at 8:00am this morning to place flags on over 20,000 graves at the Biloxi National Cemetery. It always moves me to see so many people - families with their kids, active duty military, Boy and Girl Scouts, military retirees, bikers, and people without a connection to the military who just want to show their respect.

The next opportunity to show respect for those who we honor on Memorial Day is next Tuesday, when it is time to pick up the flags so they can be used again next year. 8:00am if you can be there.

Sadly, neither the placement of flags nor their removal got much press this year. The placement was only noted in the "Sun Herald Marque" section on Friday. WLOX mentioned placement of flags but failed to give a time. No one other than the Cemetery Director has mentioned the removal of the flags.

Typically, while over 1000 people are willing and able to place flags on Saturday, many fewer are available on Tuesday. The last time I helped, two years ago, I probably picked up 150 flags. Today I placed only 20 because there were so many people in attendance.

So, the cemetery administration needs a lot of help on Tuesday. If you can come out, please do. And I am sure that it is the same is true for other National Cemeteries around the region.

Here's the link to the Biloxi National Cemetery:

But even they don't mention flag placement or removal.

Hope some of you can come out to help.
