With the economy effecting many and finding ways to save money or cut expenses, this might be helpful to you. Or if you know a family or a friend that is in need, you could do this for them.

Angel Food Ministries is a non-profit, non-denominational organization dedicated to providing grocery relief and financial support to communities throughout the United States.

Blessing in a Box

Angel Food is available in a quantity that can fit into a medium-sized box at $30 per unit. Each month's menu is different than the previous month and consists of both fresh and frozen items with an average retail value of approximately $60. Comparison shopping has been done across the country in various communities using a wide range of retail grocery stores and has resulted in the same food items costing from between $42 and $78.

Generally, one unit of food assists in feeding a family of four for about one week or a single senior citizen for almost a month. The food is all the same high quality one could purchase at a grocery store. There are no second-hand items, no damaged or out-dated goods, no dented cans without labels, no day-old breads and no produce that is almost too ripe.

Also offered are specialty boxes such as steaks, chicken and pork. Many participants in this bonus program appreciate the expanded choices. Additionally, there is no limit to the number of units or bonus foods an individual can receive, and there are no applications to complete or qualifications to which participants must adhere. Angel Food Ministries also participates in the U.S. Food Stamp program, using the Off-Line Food Stamp Voucher system.

How Does It Work

Orders and distribution are handled by church host sites. Orders are collected by the host sites during the first part of each month. And then you pick it up at the host sites toward the end of the month. In Austin there are several church host sites around the city. Order online by a certain date, and then pick it up on a certain date. Just need to bring a box to put the food in.

Personally I have done this a few times, usually when they have a good variety of Fresh fruit and vegetables. Not only that, for just 30 dollars to help someone else in need and give them a box of food also feels good, especially these days (when money is tight for so many)

what a terrific site, I know a few folks(and their kids) that will benefit from it, thanks for posting.
This is something that even the middle to upper middle class folks can do also. Everyone can participate because each distribution facility gets a portion of each box sold and the more boxes that are being sold the economies of scale drive down the cost. We've done this for a couple of months and the food is good quality and certainly it is affordable.
