Colon Cancer Awareness Month

I realize the month is 1/3 gone, but I am still going to spread the word.

March is Colon Cancer Awareness Month and this is a cause that's very personal to me. I had CC 5-1/2 years ago, at the age after 28. So, I know all of the excuses and embarrassing jokes that can come from getting a colonoscopy, but a real man doesn't run from cancer just because someone is going to stick a probe up his butt.

I strongly encourage anyone in the highest risk group (ages 50 and up) to get screened regularly.

For everyone else, don't ignore the warning signs your body gives off. "Toughing" it out is a load of B.S., listen to your body.

If you're interested in knowing more, visit http://www.ccalliance.org they have plenty of information for patients, relatives, or for those that want to get involved.

Thank you.

Be sure it is a reputable, quality group with a reliable lab, and make sure you ask (before you go "out") if they intend to remove any polyps while there ....

... giving you a "take home" CD of the procedure is a nice touch too!

I've never heard of Osmoprep, I've had 4 different colon preps. My favorite was the Fleet phosphosoda, but that is no longer available. My least favorite was the electrolyte powder mix I had to drink before my colon resection surgery. I used apple juice as the chaser and couldn't touch the stuff for nearly 2 years, due to the unpleasant memories.

The preparation, the day before is the worst part.
I've been going every two years for a long time. I agree...the prep is the only bad part.
Does a reach around count?

My family and I all permanently lost a part of ourselves when a family member died of colon cancer at a very young age. Unfortunately, it wasn't something anyone would have known to look for in someone so young. It's a very real threat nowadays and I encourage both the guys and ladies to get a checkup not just for themselves but also for everyone of those you may hold dear.

The prep sucks because you gotta drink that oral laxative stuff. You know the ones with a name like "GO Lytely" (yah right!!) The procedure is cake though. Especially, if you opt to get knocked out first
