Family members have been relentless in insisting that I turn on the "Find Your Friends" feature on the IPhone.
It's actually very useful for every day use to see where someone is. I've been using the "it's creepy, 1984 big brother is watching" as an excuse not to use it.
So last night they turned the feature on my phone. It would look incredibly suspicious if I turned it off right now.
This puts a big time wrench in hobby activities. I just had to cancel an appointment because it's on now. Luckily I noticed an hour or so before the appointment, other wise I could have been caught.
Anyone encountered this, and figured out a way around it ? Having a separate hobby phone is moot. I still need my phone on me.

Get hobby phone. Leave real phone plugged into charger at home and play dumb when SO asks why you didn't have phone with you.
Put it into airplane mode... to conserve battery
Find my friends does not work while in a call unless you have att
I personally dont use and wont. Id tell my family Im not going to. The stuff people share and track via phones/facebook...
For me it has nothing to do with the hobby, we are already tracked like animals and I can pay $30 to find anyone's life story on the internet.
Start bitching about the NSA and taking steps to protect not only your privacy but also the privacy of your family. Just pretend your paranoid and make a big deal out of making sure they don't have theirs turned on either.
The original concept was to (1) be able to see where your friends are, so you can maybe meet up, or share an experience (store, movie, park). Also, (2) was as a safety function, in case you need to find someone. In our endeavors, we are usually spending time somewhere we don't want to explain (who we are with / what we are doing).
I would turn it off and let it be known that you don't like being tracked and leave it at that.
I like ISO's airplane mode option- if u have the find friends on... I have it off.
You might find out a family member just left the same address of your favorite provider, you might be gettting cousin bobby's sloppy seconds lol.
Airplane mode is great idea, because iPhones do make it easy to "accidentally" hit and turn on.
As a tangent, if I had V at my house, you're damn sure I wouldn't be breaking off money for working girls

Eff that...turn it off...no way would i ever submit to that
Interesting, is this a feature limited to I phones? I have a samson galaxy 4, don't recall seeing that feature listed, probably missed it,darn,I'm still looking for the "suck your dick" feature!
Pretending to inadvertantly leave the phone at home would probably work once but does not work as a long term solution.
Pretending to be sanctimonious about being monitored by the government or anyone else is bound to ratchet up the suspicion level on all but the most naive people that you are trying to lie to.
I'm not sure how this thing works and I fortunately don't have anyone to lie to but it sounds like the move is to leave the phone at work and pretend to be working, unless you have a bad job or bad relationships with people at work who may tell on you.
Say you're sick of spending too much time playing on your smart phone. You want to down grade to a dumb phone... a good old flip phone.
