Seems like this is a country that needs LOTS of help.
I'm pro-immigration and believe the borders should be open to anyone that wants to work hard and achieve the American dream. Most of us are immigrants and I see no reason to deny anyone the right to be free. The ONLY reason this country is as special as it is is the massive influx of immigrants we welcomed during the 19th and early 20th centruy. Our newly-discovered sense of provincialism (highlighted by ID checks like Arizona's, listening posts along the border and concrete fences spanning S. Texas) is anti-American since it flies in the face of what made us a great nation. If you're coming here to commit crimes or vegetate please stay out.....or else. Unfortunately, our borders are so porous that we can't keep people out, let alone everything else that flows into the U.S. that's sparked the kind of gang wars and killing fields we haven't seen since Pol Pot (granted, he was MUCH worse but this country's on OUR border).
I'd like to see another 15 or 20 stars on the flag. Seventy states sounds about right! We need some additional elbow room. I'd propose Canada but it's too fucking cold and those folks are a bit too proud about "Oh Canada" to make it worth our time to improve their lot in life. They're already financially secure (unlike Mexico), free (try talking in public about one of the many groups that've put Mexico in the mess it's in and see how long before your headless corpse is found on the freeway!) and safe (take a drive into Mexico from El Paso and see how long you last) so there's just no incentive from their perspective. Besides, they can't sing, play sports, laugh out loud in public or produce a decent grunge band. Who wants that?
Mexico's a different story. It's a total basket case in deep denial and without resources, backbone or a pair to get the job done. For God's sake, the elected and appointed officials in the border cities are fleeing to the United States in order to (literally) keep their heads!
Today, their armed forces are even more inept than Santa Anna's was when he took an ass whoopin' from a bunch of butt-scratchin' presume-ignorant migrants called Texans. You could simply have the tanks at Foort Hood head south along with several divisions from the army and be in the State of Chiapas in a couple of weeks. Do you think anyone would "really" fight back? The people of Mexico would gain their independence, we could send in strike teams to wipe out and/or corral cartel members, sweep out the corrupt elected officials, impose, perhaps, 10 years of martial law while the population is integrated into the U.S. and carve the country up into 15 or 20 new territories just like we did as we expanded West.
Since none of the countries comprising S. America are going to want any of the miscreants that destroyed Mexico entering their country we can suggest they close their borders and allow the U.S. Army to sanitize the population (i.e. off to jail or worse with the members of gangs, cartels or government officials who sold their country out) as our Army moves South. Otherwise it'll be their problem. They''ve been allowed to destroy a people and a country. A Gulag similar to Guantanamo would be mighty nice!
Mexico is awash with natural resources, including a hard-working population that would be afforded the opportunity to live anywhere they wish within the newly-shaped U.S. We could use the oil, natural gas, silver, copper, bismuth, timber, gypsum, manganese, sulfur, zinc and gold. It's 5,000+ miles of coastline border some of the world's largest fishing grounds AND best tourist destinations. It's 4th in world corn production, sorghum and beans. Almost 40% of the country is forested with hardwoods. Those resources would allow for a dramatic improvement in the lives of the citizens of our newest territories. It'd likely take about 100 years to turn what used to be called Mexico into what we know as America, but it's so beat up right now that it's just going to take that long. But 3 generations from now there will be a much better and larger United States of America.
The nation to our South has had it's chance to succeed. Now it's time to for the U.S. to do what it did best when it slowly (but surely) spread West and took the shape it holds today. Time to head South!
