The President and Health Care

During the campaign candidate Trump continually ridiculed The Affordable Care Act. He attacked it regularly and often. He also claimed that if elected he would quickly rid the nation of the ACA. His plan -he repeated over and over to cheering throngs- would be cheaper and better. We're now watching a very contested debate and lots of deep disagreement over a new health care plan, one that would replace and repeal the ACA. What is happening is what is important about the political process. There is a spirted back and forth going on. Republicans need a visible, articulate champion to boost their prospects. It is also clear the public is confused and divided on this issue. That complicates the positions of their representatives in Washington. So, where is the President? He has not presented one single speech to the American public advocating for a new health plan. Not one. He quips, tweets, and issues shorty statements that lack substance. Where is the President on this matter after all the noise he made in the campaign? Is his relative silence part of a strategy? Or does his silence reflect something else? Presidents can use their position to compel the public, to inform the public, to move Congress. But in this matter, when an issue the President hammered on repeatedly during his election is at stake, he has made almost no public statements explaining the proposal and why it is necessary. I am waiting for him to act like a leader on this significant matter.

Yea but he has vacationed at his golf courses , played golf and gotten free publicity for his businesses!

The debate over health care's future, and bills promoted by the Republican majority in both chambers, are the closest thing we have yet seen from the standpoint of hardcore "issue" debate and tactics that has involved the executive branch. We have now been able to witness the President's skills at marshalling and negotiating in this arena. I stand by my earlier opinion that the President's failure to lead is revealing. This was not a strategy aimed at winning. It was a strategy aimed at protecting his backside. That, folks, is why the so-called "swamp" is such a disliked aspect of public service/politics. Our President failed to engage in an issue he used to his advantage during the campaign. When it came to demonstrating his so-called negotiating skills he disappeared. He negotiated NOTHING. He left this matter to Ryan and McConnell. His actions after the House failed to pass a measure were confusing, and they left Ryan and others out to dry. On the healthcare debate I'd give the President a big fat F. He moved no one, showed no understanding of the issues, and actually lost support. Our President talked a lot in his campaign about this issue, but when push came to shove he whined, withered and flunked out.
