I would take the 14th Amendment portion regarding the payment of our debts, use it to order the Treasury to continue, and I would shove it so far up Republican Asses and just quit talking to them from here on out.

You obviously vote for those people CND. Listen to the rhetoric. If the debt ceiling is not raised then social security checks will not be sent out (the GOP leadership has said repeatedly that social security checks will not be stopped), that soldiers will not be paid (once again the GOP has repeatedly said that will not happen), and veterans will not get benefits (how many times does the GOP leadership have to say it). Who is the hostage taker? Even in Kansas City when the money stream is threatened what did Funkhauser talked of taking police off the streets instead of cancelling monthly luncheons, large murals, and obtuse art work. Obama is doing the same thing; we will lose veteran benefits and aid for the elderly instead of losing treadmills for shrimp, research on menstrating sheep, and the like.
Maybe you can explain your statement but the 14th amendment was passed to deal with the remains of the Civil War. Slavery was abolished and all freedmen were citizens. Their children would be citizens for just being born here. The United States backed up any monetary claim for any expense in fighting the war. However, the United States would not cover the cost of Southern states or citizens for the expenses regarding the freeing of the slaves. So I am not sure which part of the 14th amendment that you think applies. Just in case, remember that little clause about the law. That would be Congress voting and that would be the GOP voting not to raise the debt limit in accordance with the Constitution. Completely legal, lawful, and constitutional.

The American dream is unchecked, uncontrolled debt accumulation? Really?
Weren't you just saying something about destroying America in other posts? You don't think spiraling debt accumulation without even a feeble attempt to slow it down won't destroy us?
Please Cat, lets have some intellectual honesty here. Just a few months ago, Republicans and Dems went toe to toe over the budget. They waited until the 11th hour to pass a budget before the gov't shutdown. After all the grandstanding, the best they could was reduce spending by less than 0.5%. Do you REALLY think those same Congressmen (Democrats and Republicans) are capable of reigning in our bloated spending without powerful incentive?
In the past decade, the American voters have kicked Republicans out of power, and in 2010 kicked Democrats out of control in the House, narrowed the majority in the Senate, and will quite likely complete the process in 2012 and vote in a GOP majority in both the Senate and the House.
The American voters have been telling Congress for over a decade to get their spending under control. Nothing has changed. At what point will your own patience wear thin with broken promises, and outright lies? Clearly it hasn't if you think that re-interpreting the Constitution to mean what it doesn't mean is the solution to our debt problem.
The 14th Amendment states "the validity of public debt of the United States.....shall not be questioned". Keywords are: validity and questioned. Refusing to, or failing to raise the debt ceiling is in no way contrary to the interpretation of the 14th Amendment. It was specifically aimed at debt created during the course of the Civil War. The phrase 'shall not be questioned' in NO way implies an unchecked license to create new debt. It implies the Federal Gov'ts Constitutional obligation to satisfy its debts. If the gov't must satisfy those debts after going through default, so be it. The spirit of the Amendment remains intact regardless of how and when those debts are honored.

If we're talking nuclear options, I'd rather see Obama decide what debts get priority after the Republicans run out the clock. Social Security checks for Texas?...low priority. Debts owed to Illinois...high priority.
