Answer: George W. Bush raised the debt ceiling 7 times
raising a debt ceiling when there is a surplas is a non-issue. raising a debt ceiling because you overspend is another thing.

To Mr. R and others who want to redistribute my resources: A Government Surplus means the taxpayers are OVERTAXED. I'm continually amazed at the utter paucity of simple economic sense of cents left in the left.
NObama said in a speach a few years ago "“The fact that we are here today to debate raising America’s debt Limits a sign of leadership failure. It is a sign that the US Government cannot pay its own bills. It is a sign that we now depend On ongoing financial assistance from foreign countries to finance our Government’s reckless fiscal policies. Increasing America’s debt Weakens us domestically and internationally. Leadership means that ‘the buck stops here.'

Instead, Washington is shifting the burden of bad choices today onto The backs of our children and grandchildren. America has a debt Problem and a failure of leadership. Americans deserve better."

OK you liberals, how is it that NOBama wants to raise the debt ceiling now instead of curbing spending NOT a sign of his blatant lies and contradictions? Based on his own words he is a leadership failure.

Gladman - by your logic, we SHOULD always carry a deficit?

Not how I run my business, or my checkbook.

As for the rest... maybe we should do away with ALL govt programs except providing for the common defense. Let the states take care of their own problems.

That would ease the deficit, and give more power to the states.

Of course, that means they should have a balance. The govt isn't a business, as anyone who knows macroeconomics can explain, but it operates in similar terms. Balanced budgets are important. Paying our debts is important. Keeping inflation at bay is important. Creating real jobs by getting out of business's bizniz is important.

Regarding your recommendation to end everything except defense, I'd keep a few other interstate things, but yeah, the federated United States (plural), as set forth in the Constitution and its amendments, would be a lot better than the practical empire we are living in now.

Gladman, that is not what you said, you said this:
"A Government Surplus means the taxpayers are OVERTAXED."

And please elaborate and explain this statement with more clarity please:
"Creating real jobs by getting out of business's bizniz is important."
