A drunk father allegedly allowed his 8 year-old son to drive his pick-up truck on a southeast Louisiana highway on Saturday while he slept, until patrol officers pulled over the boy, police said.
The boy was driving the Chevrolet truck on Interstate 12 near the town of Holden, with his father in the passenger seat and his 4 year-old sister in the back seat, Louisiana State Police said in a statement.
A passing motorist noticed the pick-up truck was being driven erratically and called police.
When Louisiana state troopers pulled over the truck in Livingston Parish, they found the 8 year-old boy behind the wheel and interviewed the father, 28 year-old Billy Joe Madden of Hattiesburg, Mississippi, police said.
Police said they determined Madden was drunk and that he had been sleeping while his son drove the vehicle, en-route to Dallas, Texas.
Madden was arrested and booked into jail on two counts of child desertion, parent allowing a minor to drive, open container and two counts of no child restraint and no seatbelt.
Madden remains in jail at Livingston Parish Detention Center in lieu of $1,474 bail, said sheriff's deputy Dustin Sanders at the facility.
Both of Madden's children were turned over to child welfare authorities and were awaiting the arrival of a family member who could take custody of them, police said.
How sad, this is why I openly support humane euthanasia for unfit parents. No child should be left in the care of anyone that would allow this to happen. I wish the adoption laws weren't so rigid in the US, maybe people would stop adopting from other countries and pay more attention to the countless kids in need right here.
And it made CNN NEWS.the state should give the boy a honorary drivers license

Actually have experience with a similar story myself years ago. The father was passed out in the passenger seat and his 11yr old son was driving him home. The father was arrested and then the boys grandmother had to come and get him (at least he had family so he didn't have to go into the system). I have never figured out why we have to take a test to get a drivers license but any moron can be a parent. There are many great parents out there but those that come from the shallow end of the gene pool should not be allowed to reproduce. Unfortunately they do and 9 times out of 10 the gov't has to take care of them. Stepping off my soap box. Back to your regularly scheduled forum.

At least he didn't let the 4-year-old try to drive.

What's the big deal? I was driving by 8 and had my own car at 12. I ran the wheels off that VW bug. Only got caught once and the officer told me to get out of town and get that car back to the country where I belonged. That was a different day and time. lol
The 8 year old was on the news this am ,he was offered a job at the police academy teaching drivers education, the cadets have to drive around donuts
Yeah, it's ridiculous that there are hundreds of thousands of "throw away kids" in the system but I can't adopt because I'm not married. I am college educated and have 2 wonderful and well behaved boys already. Same with same sex couples; it's impossible for them to adopt from a government ran agency. They rather keep these kids in temp houses or foster facilities than let non traditional or non conformist people give them the love, acceptance, and family they are more than capable of providing. Just another little kink in the system that ends up hurting already victimized children that have no voice. :sigh:
i would rather have a single mom adopt, than two gay bastards adopt, how would you like to introduce your parents if they were gay, this is dadhe and dadshe
Seeing what so called normal parents can do to a child i dont care if they are gay lesbian transexual or hermafrodite. Just dont do horrible things to your children.
