MSNBC producer pens scathing exit letter: Ratings model 'blocks diversity of thought and content'
BY JOE CONCHA - 08/04/20 09:42 AM EDT

Just In...
Producer Ariana Pekary recently resigned from MSNBC with an open letter accusing the news network of predicating its editorial process on ratings and alleging that its model "blocks diversity of thought and content because the networks have incentive to amplify fringe voices and events."

"I don’t know what I’m going to do next exactly but I simply couldn’t stay there anymore," Ariana Pekary, a producer for MSNBC's second-most-watched program, "The Last Word with Lawrence O'Donnell," wrote on her website. "My colleagues are very smart people with good intentions. The problem is the job itself. It forces skilled journalists to make bad decisions on a daily basis."

"It’s possible that I’m more sensitive to the editorial process due to my background in public radio, where no decision I ever witnessed was predicated on how a topic or guest would 'rate.' The longer I was at MSNBC, the more I saw such choices — it’s practically baked into the editorial process — and those decisions affect news content every day," she continued. "Likewise, it’s taboo to discuss how the ratings scheme distorts content, or it’s simply taken for granted, because everyone in the commercial broadcast news industry is doing the exact same thing."

"But behind closed doors, industry leaders will admit the damage that’s being done," she continued.

Pekary, who worked on O'Donnell's show until July 24, added that she believes the news media is making the same mistake it did in 2016 by focusing almost exclusively on President Trump in 2020 and not so much on presumptive Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden.

"This cancer risks our democracy, even in the middle of a presidential election," she writes. "Any discussion about the election usually focuses on Donald Trump, not Joe Biden, a repeat offense from 2016 (Trump smothers out all other coverage). Also important is to ensure citizens can vote by mail this year, but I’ve watched that topic get ignored or 'killed' numerous times."

"The model blocks diversity of thought and content because the networks have incentive to amplify fringe voices and events, at the expense of others," Pekary also wrote. "All because it pumps up the ratings."

Pekary joined MSNBC seven years ago as part of the launch of actor Alec Baldwin's weekly program, which lasted just five weeks.

The resignation echoes that of former New York Times columnist Bari Weiss, who last month penned a scathing resignation letter to Times published A.G. Sulzberger on her website claiming a "hostile work environment" by fellow staffers because of her centrist views.

Weiss also alleged that editors were reluctant to go "against the grain" with pieces that could spur a backlash on social media.

"Showing up for work as a centrist at an American newspaper should not require bravery," she wrote in the letter, which quickly went viral.

MSNBC is having its best year from a ratings perspective in its 24-year history and is currently the second-most-watched channel on cable behind Fox News.

This is unfortunately not a "defection"... this issue is widespread across the media. Ratings have long been more important than facts-- they want that viewership which leads to advertising dollars.
They are so far to left that no other view points are tolerated...there is no room for centrist anywhere in the democrap party.
Prove me wrong...

not concentrating on biden, Trump gets all the attention.

concentrating on Biden and ignore Trump? now that is an oxymoron.

more biden exposure would be fatal to biden.

A great example of "no other view points are tolerated" is the far religious right.
Really? Who? I'd like some names. Tom Perez? Keith Ellison?

If you believe that you're vulnerable to the bait and switch.
Who cares about the religious far right. Most of them just don't want abortion. The far left has made them look rationale with their abortion on demand up to and including birth.

And could you give us examples of "anybody" being fired from their job ( not counting a religious organization ) for not following the tenets of the far right? Anybody at any newspaper, media of any kind, Hollywood, corporate America? A recent poll suggested that a majority of Democrats working at any job finding out that a co-woker ( yes, I left out an 0 on purpose ) had donated to or supported Trump, should be fired from their job. I think it was about 28% of Republicans which is also a disgusting number for a people who supposedly believe in Democracy, multiculturalism and tolerance referring to Democrats. Personally I think multiculturalism sucks but realize attempts to stifle it could lead to it's own set of problems..

While you may be correct in saying that not all Democrats are far left, you seem to be desperately trying to convince us that what we see and hear, a large part of the Democrat party, isn't taking control through intimidation through violence. Where is the comparable violence from the far right, a few guys with Tiki torchs marching flanked by hundreds of Antifa ready to tear them to shreds without the police there to protect their right to protest?

No Grace, try as you may, you are whistling past the grace yard if you can't see what's happening and thinking that when Joe Biden is elected, the moderates of the party such as they are, will take control and push out the far left.

I want to quote someone, Sara Carter. If you aren't familiar with the name, she along with John Soloman have been part of a handful of journalist on the so called Trump/ Russia conspiracy story from day one. I made a statement a few weeks ago as to what I thought would happen if Biden is elected. The reason I'm going to quote Sara Carter, is because she, a respected journalist, has come to the same conclusion I have. I like it when professional journalists come to the same conclusions I do.

She said "Democrats are going to try and ride this wave ( BLM, Antifa, riots, civil unrest ) believing that they can control this beast, this beast they have fed, this beast they have allowed ( without complaint ) to grow, this Marxist, Socialist beast that exists within their party. What they don't realize, they just have to look at history, is that once they have feed this beast, ridden this beast to the top, it's going to eat them".

I just want to be on record with this prediction. Obviously from your writing, you do not believe this will come to pass with the election of Biden and the "moderates". I hope you are right and I am wrong but I doubt it. It shouldn't take long to find out who is right and who is wrong. We should have a good idea by this time next year.

No, I don't believe it will come to pass.. just like I didn't feel Trump being elected was the end of the world as we know it. People want to give the President WAY more power than they actually have.

Hell, when Obama was President, gun shops made a KILLING because they managed to convince everyone to stock up because Obama was coming for their guns. It was fucking hilarious.

If the moderates won't raise a hand to stop the violence now, do you actually think they will try to stop the violence when they have the power? When crime goes off the charts in this country as it is doing now, will the left have the guts to try and rein it in or submit?

BLM and Antifa aren't going to slow down with a Democrat win, they will accelerate having seen that the Democrat party is to cowardly to try and stop them from actually burning down America believing a NEW America will rise from the ashes.
