Mayor de Blasio lashed out at Gov. Cuomo Thursday, calling him a serial bully for seeking to squelch criticism of his handling of the coronavirus death toll in nursing homes.
“It’s a sad thing to say ... but that’s classic Andrew Cuomo,” de Blasio said on MSNBC. “A lot of people in New York state have received those phone calls.”
Hizzoner says he “100%” believes the account of Assemblyman Ron T. Kim (D-Queens), who says Cuomo berated him at length in an effort to get the lawmaker to soften criticism of the nursing home COVID scandal.
Kim says the governor threatened to “destroy him” if he didn’t back down.
“It’s very, very sad, no public servant no person who’s telling the truth should be treated that way,” de Blasio said. “The threats, the belittling ... many many times I’ve heard that and I know a lot of other people in this state have heard that.”
The brutal takedown of Cuomo marked the latest crisis in the rocky relationship between the two most powerful men in New York.

They have feuded for years over a string of policy and personality issues but Cuomo’s latest crisis has opened the door for de Blasio to speak his mind more harshly than ever.
Cuomo, who received local and global adulation for bravely leading the state through the dreadful early days of the COVID-19 pandemic, is now accused of seeking to cover up the toll in hard-hit nursing homes.
Democratic critics and outnumbered Albany Republicans alike are demanding answers as the scandal mushrooms.
The Brooklyn U.S. Attorney’s Office and the FBI are investigating the Cuomo administration’s handling of nursing home deaths, NBC News reported, quoting senior officials familiar with the probe.
Kim has said he was stunned to hear Cuomo berate him in a phone call and refuses to talk to the governor anymore except through his lawyer.
De Blasio said anyone who has interacted with Cuomo has experienced similar outbursts over the years.
“It’s just the script, it’s exactly what a lot of us have heard before. It’s not a surprise, it’s sad,” De Blasio said. “It’s not the way people should be treated.”
