National Review Pelosi’s H.R. 1 Is an Authoritarian Outrage

Democrats like to accuse anyone who doesn’t embrace every one of their brand-new, rapidly evolving, Constitution-corroding positions of being “authoritarians.” It’s often an impressive feat of projection. For a pristine example of the genre, take Jonathan Chait’s recent New York magazine piece alleging that former vice president Mike Pence is laying the “blueprint” for a fascistic GOP state in his new Heritage Foundation op-ed.
© Joshua Roberts/Reuters Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi (D., Calif.) speaks to the media on Capitol Hill in Washington, D.C., March 4, 2021. What “authoritarian” diktats does Herr Pence have in store for our fragile American democracy? For starters, the former vice president argues that states, as they always have, should conduct their own elections rather than permit a narrow partisan majority led by Nancy Pelosi and Chuck Schumer to unilaterally nationalize and dictate the rules for every locality in perpetuity — as they did with a House vote on a sweeping measure known as H.R. 1.
To be more precise, Pence writes that he opposes empowering the federal government to:
  • compel states to count mail-in votes that arrive up to ten days after Election Day.
  • compel states to allow ballot harvesting.
  • compel states to ban voter ID laws.
  • compel states to allow bureaucrats to redraw congressional districts.
  • compel states to allow felons to vote.
  • compel states to undermine free-speech rights by imposing “onerous legal and administrative burdens on candidates, civic groups, unions, nonprofit organizations.”
The latter of these initiatives is an outrageous attack on the First Amendment, but all of them are contained in some way in H.R. 1 — which amounts to an integrity-corroding, banana-republic attempt to override the will of states, which most Democrats don’t seem to believe should exist. Or, at least, not for the red ones.

What Pence failed to mention in his op-ed is that the bill would also mandate 15 days of early voting, automatic voter registration, and online voter registration. It would compel states to count ballots cast by voters who are in the wrong precincts, prohibit election officials from reviewing the eligibility of voters, and bar officials from removing ineligible voters from the rolls. It would create a Soviet-sounding “Commission to Protect Democratic Institutions” to circumvent the judicial system.
Now, even if you support some of these proposals on a state level, most of them didn’t exist in any state a few years ago.
Chait contends that Pence’s “most remarkable rhetorical maneuver is to argue that we must ‘heal’ the country, which means not passing any election-law changes in Congress, and then proceeds to argue in the very next paragraph for restoring ‘confidence’ by imposing voter-suppression measures in the states.”
Pence does nothing of the sort. Here is his next paragraph.
To restore public confidence in our elections, our leaders should uphold the Constitution, reject congressional Democrats’ plan to nationalize our elections, and get about the serious work of state-based reform that will protect the integrity of the vote for every American.
Terms such as “voting restrictions” are tantamount to calling traffic laws “driving restrictions.” They are conveniently ominous sounding, leaving room for endless partisan weaponization against existing laws. Unless, that is, Democrats don’t support any “voting restrictions” whatsoever. Which might be the case. Whereas actual “voter suppression” was once maliciously deployed to obstruct the rights of American citizens, the term now basically implicates a Republican failing to personally mail in his illegal immigrant neighbor’s ballot ten days after an election.
Democrats rely on these distorted terms because the vast majority of Americans support some basic voter-integrity laws. Take, for instance, Chait’s assertion that Pence wants to “restrict the franchise with strict photo-ID requirements, limits on early and mail voting, and so on.”
“Strict” does a lot of heavy lifting here. As far as I can tell, 80 percent of Americans support photo-ID laws. Now, we can disagree in good faith about the effects of forcing Americans to get a photo identification before helping decide the fate of the nation, but requiring a citizen to prove his identity falls well short of any definition of “authoritarian.” Or, if it is, then nearly every Western European country admired by the Left should be deemed an autocratic state.
It is quite something to read Chait, who spent years spinning conspiracy theories undermining the veracity of a presidential election (and as far as we know, he still believes the 2000 presidential election was stolen as well), contend that Pence does not have any evidence of “significant voting irregularities.” Now, I happen to agree. But if we’re right, why is it imperative to nationalize and reimagine the entire voting system? We already have constitutional protections for voting rights and a judicial system to adjudicate conflicts.
Those are rhetorical questions, of course. The entire case for H.R. 1 is predicated on bad-faith arguments. Democrats want to corrode the system because they believe it will help them win. “Pence,” claims Chait, “holds a position that represents a synthesis of Trump’s idiosyncratic personal authoritarianism and his party’s longstanding anti-democratic trend.” By “democratic,” liberals mean a direct democracy and centralized control in which a few big states dictate and lord over how everyone lives. This, not a state demanding a photo ID, is an authoritarian attack on the proper role of federal government that is clearly laid out in the Constitution.

nazi pelosi and teh fascist DPST party ignore that rights not expressly given to the feds, are State rights.

The thrust of nazi Pelosi and her totalitarian party is to control all elections from teh DPST/DNC HQ - and destroy free elections and representative democracy

Any DPSt 'liberal ' poster - if this suits your opinion

What ever this House can do, the next House can undo.

A theory was suggested that the Progressives are pushing the worst of their programs first instead of "working in a bi-partisan way" as Biden promised, because they know they will lose the House in a mere 2 years so they are throwing every ill-conceived policy they have against the wall right now before their time is up.

The worse they do, the faster they will be out and the way this is going, I'm even more sure than I was before, that they will lose the House and maybe even the Senate in 2022.

Who was that that said there was no crisis at the border? 300 un-accompanied minors a day coming in. 177,000 expected this year and that is a low estimate in my opinion.

Hundreds of people a day now being released with no COVID test and allowed to get on a bus and go any where in America they choose.

This alone will be enough to bring down the House Democrats. Add cancel culture and defund the police movements and they don't stand a chance.

Pelosi's House is trying to push their defund the police movement although they won't call it that.

Interesting guest on Tucker last night. The Biden administration along with BLM pushing the usual lie that racial disparities in policing, are the result of police bias rather than criminal disparities in the commission of crimes.

Here are the statistics according to the guest, that the Biden admin. and BLM don't want to talk about.

In New York, Blacks commit about 75% of crimes and are 23% of the population.
In Chicago, Blacks commit about 80% of the crimes and are 30% of the population.
In Los Angeles, Blacks commit about 44% of the crimes and are 9% of the population.
In St Louis, Blacks commit about 90% of the crimes and are 46% of the population.

These disparities are replicated in every American city and they mean that the police can not go where crime is happening to protect minority victims without going disproportionately into minority neighborhoods and interacting disproportionately with Black criminals. Police don't wish or want that "reality", it's forced on them by the facts of crime, but such large data driven policing, is the only way to prevent what happened last year when over 4 dozen Black children were gunned down brutally in drive by shootings not by White Supremacists but by Black criminals, not to mention the thousands of other mostly Black victims

The left seems to believe that if we talk about these statistics, about Black criminals, we are talking about all Blacks. That is not the case any more than all Muslims are terrorists or all Republicans that voted for Trump are domestic terrorists. If we can't get past lumping all people of one group as criminals, but do talk about the problems within each group like we are obsessed with doing now in the case of a few Qanon Republican nut jobs who do not represent all Republicans, we will never be able to solve the problems that these relatively small groups within each group present.

Simply passing "anti-policing" laws will not solve the problem.

And of course the reasons for Black crime like lack of economic opportunity, fatherless homes must be addressed although the left only wants to address the former and not the latter but there is and never can be an excuse for shooting and brutalizing innocent people and especially children.

Five people died on Jan. 6th in the Capital and as tragic as that is, that number die in a week, in a day in literally every major city in this country and for some reason, we want to turn away from that fact instead of addressing it and banning AR-15's and defunding the police won't put even a small dent in that problem.

Voter suppression is the only way the Marxist/Authoritarian/wannabe dictators known as the GOP can ever win an election. It's no wonder that a Marxist/hypocrite/Repugnican like Obbie would be whining about this.

LOL! Little Nincompoop, and apparently a bunch of others, think suppressing votes of the dead, illegal, out of state, criminal, and nonexistent is a bad thing. They’re against every measure of insuring that every citizen’s vote counts.

We're not the ones who constantly does their best by gerrymandering or change the rules everytime we lose like your Marxist/Authoritarian/hypocritic party does.

You want a perfect recent example take a look at Georgia. Repugnicans got their asses beat in their own backyard so now they're passing new voter restriction laws that are obviously targeting blacks. That is typical Marxist/Authoritarian/wannabe dictator like behavior right there.

Two weeks voting before the election and ballot “drop boxes”, says the times. Anyone who doesn’t see that for the ruse that it is has a single digit IQ.

It’s real easy: election day is one day, and a national holiday (employers eligible for a tax credit for paid wages). Absentee ballots must be requested, with proper ID and explanation of need, and verified upon receipt (before Election Day). Paper ballots for everyone else, with signature verification and an easily audited paper trail.

This election was an epic clusterfuck, the democrats want to make every one going forward even worse. We can not and do not have a functional representative republic without trustworthy elections.

Editorial: Blacks’ biggest enemy is a white liberal

https://www.thetimesnews.com/opinion...-white-liberal

Malcolm X was a Muslim minister and human rights activist. Born in 1925, he met his death at the hands of an assassin in 1965. Malcolm X was a courageous advocate for black civil rights, but unlike Martin Luther King, he was not that forgiving of whites for their crimes against black Americans. He did not eschew violence as a tool to achieve civil and human rights. His black and white detractors accused him of preaching racism and violence. Despite the controversy, he has been called one of the greatest and most influential black Americans.
Many black Americans have great respect for Malcolm X. Many schools bear his name, and many streets have been renamed in honor of him, both at home and abroad. But while black Americans honor Malcolm X, one of his basic teachings goes largely ignored. I think it’s an important lesson, so I will quote a large part of it.
Malcolm X said: “The worst enemy that the Negro have is this white man that runs around here drooling at the mouth professing to love Negros and calling himself a liberal, and it is following these white liberals that has perpetuated problems that Negros have. If the Negro wasn’t taken, tricked or deceived by the white liberal, then Negros would get together and solve our own problems. I only cite these things to show you that in America, the history of the white liberal has been nothing but a series of trickery designed to make Negros think that the white liberal was going to solve our problems. Our problems will never be solved by the white man.”
There’s a historical tidbit that those much younger than I (almost 83 years old) are ignorant of. In black history, we have been called — and called ourselves — several different names. Among the more respectable have been “colored,” “Negro,” “black,” “Afro-American” and “African-American.” I recall when Mrs. Viola Meekins, when I was a student at Stoddart-Fleisher Junior High School in the late 1940s, had our class go page by page through a textbook and correct each instance in which Negro was printed with a lowercase “n.” In Malcolm X’s day, and mine, Negro was a proud name and not used derisively by blacks as it is today.
Malcolm X was absolutely right about our finding solutions to our own problems. The most devastating problems that black people face today have absolutely nothing to do with our history of slavery and discrimination. Chief among them is the breakdown of the black family, wherein 75 percent of blacks are born to single, often young, mothers. In some cities and neighborhoods, the percentage of out-of-wedlock births is over 80. Actually, “breakdown” is the wrong term; the black family doesn’t form in the first place. This is entirely new among blacks.
According to the 1938 Encyclopaedia of the Social Sciences, that year only 11 percent of black children were born to unwed mothers. As late as 1950, female-headed households constituted only 18 percent of the black population. Today it’s close to 70 percent. In much earlier times, during the late 1800s, there were only slight differences between the black family structure and those of other ethnic groups. In New York City in 1925, 85 percent of kin-related black households were two-parent households. Welfare has encouraged young women to have children out of wedlock. The social stigma once associated with unwed pregnancy is all but gone. Plus, “shotgun” weddings are a thing of the past. That was when male members of a girl’s family made the boy who got her pregnant live up to his responsibilities.
The high crime rates in so many black communities impose huge personal costs and have turned once-thriving communities into economic wastelands. The Ku Klux Klan couldn’t sabotage chances for black academic excellence more effectively than the public school system in most cities. Politics and white liberals will not solve these and other problems. As Malcolm X said, “our problems will never be solved by the white man.”
