Back in the Civilized Era, when Salah Izzedin's Cabaret Royale first opened the upstairs members section, they had two independent sound systems, one for downstairs, one for upstairs. They were fed the same program, but volume and equalization were completely independent, and the DJs were told IN SO MANY WORDS to set the upstairs system so that the customers (and entertainers!) could talk and hear each other without raising their voices.
At least one DJ who got fired from there because he refused to back the upstairs volume down. He was one of those who believed that the only correct setting for a volume control was "wide open".
After Salah sold CR to Duncan Burch, one of the first things that Duncan's crew did was rip out the upstairs sound system, and tell the DJs to crank it so the downstairs system did it all. Not a good move...
