Anyone heard of SQUARE APP FOR YOUR PHONE.. ??

SO YESTERDAY I WAS HAVING A CONVO WITH MY COUSIN AND SHE ASKED IF I TOOK CREDIT CARDS, I SAID I DIDNT BC I THOUGHT I HAD TO HAVE THE BUISNESS TAX ID #.. WELL ANYWHO SHES A HAIR STYLIST AND SHE SAID SHE DOWLOADED THIS FREE APP CALLED " SQUARE " AND SHOWED ME HOW TO USE IT. SHE SAYS SHE LOVES IT BC WHEN SHE MAKES HOME VISITS TO HER CLIENTS THEY ARE STILL ABLE TO USE A CREDIT CARD. SO AFTER REVIEWING IT I WAS CONSIDERING TAKING CREDIT CARDS. I CAN PUT ANY BUISNESS NAME.. OR CREATE ONE WHICH I THOUGHT WAS GREAT.

* FIRST QUESTION DOES ANYONE HAVE ANY INFO ON THIS APP?? NEXT QUESTION WOULD A CREDIT CARD OPTION BE A PLUS FOR YOU HOBBYIST?? LAST QUESTIONS WHAT WOULD BE A NAME OF BUISNESS THAT WOULDNT RAISE A REDFLAG ON UR CC/BANK STATEMENT..??

CANT WAIT TO HEAR UR OPINION ON THIS ONE..

Cash only in this business if my opinion. I don't want or need ANY paper trails leading back. This goes for you providers as well. You can put any business you want, but if you get caught conducting transactions (maybe the company gets audited and feds get the records) and you haven't paid taxes/reported the income, you have HUGE problems on your hand! If you already pay your taxes on all transactions, then no worries. But I'm sure there are more than a few ladies who don't report at least some of the cash-only income they receive in this business.

Also, I am somewhat paranoid about using my credit card with a private party, especially knowing that they are going through a 3rd party application through a smart phone. That combination of circumstances just raises too many red flags/risks for me.

Finally, that is divulging way too much information to someone in this Hobby. Privacy is paramount for me, as I am sure it is for you and other providers. I don't like to provide my full name, much less my credit card information! I'll stick to cash-only, thank you!

I would use a prepaid visa gift card =) That way i could launder the money ie use cash or my real card to buy the gift card. Then use the visa gift card to pay the provider using the app.

They could try to track down who bought the card, but for misdemeanor shit like this they aren't going to waste the time. There's to many easy marks out there for them already to fuck with it imho.

Malachi.. I was thinking the same thing.. You can buy visa gift cards now days pretty much anywhere.. Gas stations, cvs, heb, walgreens.. Or buy a prepaid reloadable one.. And whenever u purchase them there its gonna be that store.. No trail and on my end just gift cards.. Theres nothing illegal about recieving gifts??

I have used it quite a bit...makes it easier for the people I know to pay me back what they owe. What's really nice is the card swiper I guess you can buy now to go with the App. Quick and easy. I've got a couple of them they sent me for free to test it out...

Square is legit, they have been around awhile...I've been using it since they opened it up. Kind of paypal ish but not so much. There are a couple of other legit services out there geared toward social payment like Venmo that are good too.

For some guys it's not an issue and may be a little bit of a benefit. The less trips to the ATM the better but I guess thats just personal preference. But, obviously I think most wouldn't like it given the trail. Something good to have and offer since it really doesn't cost anything but you may not get many takers.

A bank is more likely to block something depending on where it comes from then what the name of the business is. Just keep it simple and generic. Play something off your name so they'd know it was you. Lexington Ave Co. or something lol.

And what is the overhead charge for the Square App (service provider, rental/owning of card machine, monthly charge, etc.)?

There is a PayPal app and you could then accept all cc's through a third party via your phone. You just have to set up a PayPal merchant account.

Sounds like a big chunk of money for the overhead and percentage fees.

Cash only and leave no trail behind is my preference, plus I really think that those merchant fees are high....

If a provider asked for a CC, I would run the other way. Though to be honest I wouldn't mind you "swiping my card a few" times

Just make sure to keep an eye on how much money is getting deposited into your account. I think the new generation square has streamlined the charges to 2.75% per transaction.

Maybe a prepaid CC, but if One is going to get cash for that, then why not give you cash directly and maintain annonimity?
