searching a phone number

is there a specific manner to enter a telephone number into search?

Its usually works best to put in the number in the 123-456-7890 format.
Using parentheses around the area code (123) 456-7890 never works right.

Some sites will "match" on 1234567890, but not match on 123-456-7890.
Agree with Chica - the (123) form never seems to work.
When I'm trying to search, I use both.
