UFC 141: Lesnar vs. Overeem

sixxbach's Avatar
Next week will be the big heavyweight main event to end 2011 for UFC.

Lesnar returning from a second bout with a serious medical condition. He is also coming off of a loss to Cain. Lesnar is always a threat with his brute strength and agility. Ask Shane Carwin how strong Lesnar's grip is when he choked the life out of Carwin when he had Lesnar taken to the brink of defeat. Brock also is a brutal ground wrestler when he has control. Ask Mir, who got tasted his own blood on the ground. Lesnar's flaw is his striking. Can Lesnar survive the power of Overeem in time to take him down in hopes for a GNP victory?

Overeem is considered the best heavyweight from Strikeforce and now making to make his splash in the UFC. Overeem has some good stand up skills. He also is strong. There is a question of his conditioning and his ground game. Can he fight off his back if Lesnar takes him down?

My prediction is that Lesnar is able to get down Overeem and pulls out a choke on a tired Overeem ala Carwin.

Thoughts?

I think Overeem is hugely overrated. He looked horrible in his last fight and that's against sub-prime heavyweight competition. The heavyweights in Strikeforce aren't near the level of those in the UFC (not counting Roy Nelson). Unless Brock comes in extremely rusty from being off so long, I think he will destroy Overeem. Maybe I'm wrong and maybe he'll rise to the occasion having to face better competition but I don't see it at this point.
Can’t say that I'm an avid MMA observer but I think that Cain's last fight proved that a good striker (Overeem) always has a chance to surprise/upset a superior fighter (Lesnar.)
Lesnar was brutalized in the first round againt Carwin, so I hope for his sake he has improved his standup.

Additionaly I think Lesnar is at a disadvantage in all of his fights given the 265lbs weight limit. I think Lesnar who probably walks around normaly at closer to 300 pounds has to cut to much weight and loose to much stregth to make the weight limit. I wish they would add a super heavyweight division.

I 'member Lesnar nearly breaking his neck during an WWE PPV trying to execute a top rope moonsault in a match with Kurt Angle.

I think Overeem takes it with a TKO. Even though this is Overeem 1st fight in the UFC, he still has a lot of experience. I remember when he use to fight in Pride, so he has fought good competition. Lesnar is gonna have ring rust, so his only chance is taking him down.

Yes carwin rocked him good but Lesnar did take some good strikes from Carwin and choked him out. I will say that the choke out of Carwin was brutal because as big and bad as he is, Lesnar simply out manned him.

I see the same happening against Overeem. It is amazing that in only his fourth fight with very limited MMA experience he was able to beat vets like Herring, dominate Mir all but 10 seconds in two fights, and knock out Couture. Brock does have decent punching power. He did break the orbital bone of Herring and dropped Mir with one punch as well....

I just looked at the pics from the weigh in's and Overeem does not look as big as he has in the past. Their was some issue with Overeem going overseas "all of a sudden" when the athletic commission wanted a urine sample. He said he had a sick relative or something to that effect. He came back to the states and submitted a sample and passed.

This was the best I've seen Overeem look in awhile. He came in shape and just put it on Brock. I will say this. I'm starting to get suspect of Brock's willingness to take punches. It seems the minute someone lands a solid punch he backs off and just plays cover-up. I'm not talking about Overeem's last kick or even just this fight...

While I was writing, Brock announced this is his last fight. Not surprised really. I think Brock discovered that the difference between make-believe fighting and what takes place in the Octagon isn't for him.

Brock started this game very late and the fact he beat world class fighters right off the gate like Herring, Mir, Carwin, and Couture should speak volumes. The man never had time to develop. The UFC just got alot duller IMO.

You're right, Brock definitely has had a rough road the past few years with his medical issues but like you said, he also started late in the UFC. I think he made the right decision to call it quits. Should be some fun fights coming up though with Junior Dos Santos/Overeem, Cain Velasquez/Overeem and others....

I hate that Diaz won. He did pound Cerrone but I just don't like him or his brother. Hopefully someone will put it on both of them soon.
