Last WWI Veteran Passes Away

According to this story Florence Green, the last surviving WWI veteran, has passed away at the age of 110. She (that's not a typo, it was a female!) served in the Royal Air Force of Great Britain. It seems there is no consensus on whether anymore are alive or not. I recall a few months back there was a story announcing the last WWI veteran passed away. Regardless, it's amazing that somebody who served in any capacity in WWI (1914-1918) could still be alive today! Thank you for your service, and Rest in Peace Mrs. Green!

I guess that she was born around 1902, so she served at a very young age, and was only about 16 when the war ended. The military in Britain and the U.S. would take you at a young age in those days. Yep...she has seen some changes. She was born before the Wright Brothers made the first flight and then went on to serve in the first war to have fighting planes. That is amazing! May she rest in peace.

The last of a great resource now gone.

Way back in the 70's, Mrs Flinde #1 and I used to visit the farm that Mrs Flinde #1's grandparents had.

After dinner at 11:30 am, grandpa would want to talk about WWI. I was too young and dumb to pay any attention. Spent my time dragging Mrs Flinde into the woods, until the time we did it in the poison ivy.

You Burgh people may remember a little tavern called Henry's at Lincoln Way and O'Neil Blvd in beautiful suburban White Oak. Esp you dennisrn, that was just a mile or so up the street from some of your nocturnal activities.

Used to go there when I was 17 or 18 and looked like I was 15 because they served me. Filled with old guys. All wanting to talk about the Big One. Some WWII. A few WWI. But I was too young and dumb to pay attention. Too busy trying to drink beer thru my nose and playing fart songs along with the jukebox.

And now, the opportunity to talk about WWI is over forever. Why didnt I listen a little, thank these guys for what they did?

As far as I'm concerned they all deserve our honor and respect! There were many who suffered the Great War to End all Wars that never received any honors or support for their sufferings.
