Question For Computer Guys

Is there one web browser better than the others? I use IE and its been giving me more problems lately. I just need some honest opinions of what's out there.

I did try Firefox a few months ago and it wasn't compatible with some programs I use.

I use Firefox 99% of the time, but keep the other browsers around just in case some webpage doesn't render correctly, then I'll load it in one of the others, using IE as a last resort.

What I have experienced is that FireFox is the preferred alternative to IE. Safari is also good, but I have not worked with Chrome. The problem is that while most websites are compatible with all the browsers, there are some websites that require IE in order to work (primarily for the add-ons). I would suggest downloading all four and try them out - even having the same webpage loading on two simulatenously just to see if you can tell if there is a difference.

Not a computer guy, but... For all my hobby exploring, I use Opera. That way it stays "separate" from my regular web surfing. Haven't had issues with it yet.

Actually, I really like the IE9/Windows 7 combination. I also use Chrome and am beginning to like it as well. I use Safari on my iMac and iPad, but don't like it as well as IE9 or Chrome, but maybe I just need to play with it more.

Wizard, do you have a lot of problems with webpages not loading correctly with Opera? I always had problems with it a few years back.

Ummm, not that I'm aware of, SMonkey... seems to work pretty consistently for me, for what I do on here.

I prefer Google Chrome. Works best for me.

Both Chrome and Firefox now have private browsing (IE says it does, but the history and some hidden hashes beg to differ).

I haven't really seen many sites that are not built for at least the "big 3" anymore: IE, Firefox, and Chrome. Opera, while a small player, still has some basic issues handling MS specific things like style sheets and even chokes on some Java scripts I've seen.

I would suggest that you get Chrome and Firefox both and give them a whirl! Both are relatively small files and extremely easy to install. For what it's worth, if you get Firefox, make sure to get some addons that can add to your security like NoScript.

I've used Firefox for years and swear by it, but the comments of the others are what I've experienced with it, too. I don't like Safari, but on Apple stuff that's what it's best for, so I'm stuck with it. Steve Jobs was a brilliant technician but some of his obsessions have annoyingly limited his products. One thing I like about Firefix is it is independent.

I switched to firefox years ago, and have been tempted to make the change to chrome, but early on, there were certain add ons that I couldn't do without. Anyhow, if you like firefox and would like to stick with it, you can always use the add-on "IE Tab 2" to render the page in IE if it's not working properly with firefox. Just go to 'tools' and 'add-ons' and search for it. I'd also recommend 'Ad Block Plus'.

My vote is for Firefox. Although Chrome is good too.

Hi MsE, Firefox allows for a lot of customization and defaults to a pretty strict restriction setting. You might try the Tools>Privacy or Add-ons to see if the pages you are having trouble with are being blocked.

By getting to know Firefox and the add-ons that are available it seems to be the right fit for this world of ours. The guys behind the code for Firefox used to work for MS but left due to the direction it was going as to gathering personal data from users.

As to Chrome, be afraid, be very afraid. Google is so deep into the slurping information business it is out of control. Yes "slurping" is the term for gathering data from users.

@ all others #2- the world of Non-install apps is getting very, very reliable and you can find all sorts of programs that are useful but do not install on a computer; browsers, file wipers, password programs.

Some simple searches for portable apps bring up several sites dedicated to these type programs; portable apps.com or pen apps.com are two.
