apparently, fencing the US/Mexico border is a top issue for the republican candidates.... Bush spent well over a billion dollars and hasnt finished the partial fence ... did anyone ask how much it would cost to build a complete fence? Does anyone care? Does anyone care the illegals are cutting holes in the existing fence faster than we can fix them, scaling the fence with ladders, and basically making the BILLION dollar fence look like a minor obstacle at a theme park.

Here in Texas the uber wealthy ranch owners and the politically connected somehow manage to have their ranches bypassed... A 15$ MILLION DOLLAR RIVERFRONT PARCEL, suddenly becomes a $3 million dollar ranch with 2 miles of beautiful, rusty FENCEFRONT, very well might be the reason for that, IMO.

then of course on top of fence spending Gingrich wants to bring in the ( I think he said) National Guard and line the border .... the other candidates want to create new legislation similar to AZ, fence, and yada yada yada campaign blather blather blather ..

we cant enforce the current laws on the books, so create NEW legislation ?, we cant enforce the current laws because we dont have the $ or manpower, so we spend billions finishing a seemingly moot fence and call in the guard ..

that IS a Republican plan if I ever heard one.

Bush didn't spend a billion dollars on a fence. If you weren't paying attention the democratic congress cut that to 700 million and then 500 million. Only they know how much they've spent on it so far and for what. Sounds like a job for private business.

In 1901 Australia had to build a fence across their continent 2,100 miles in the outback. The fence materials were brought in by ox cart and erected by men with hand tools. They did the job in a year and a half.

DHS's U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) contractor, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE), had completed about 73 miles of primary SBI fencing costing approximately $198 million as of September 30, 2007, and about 215 miles of fencing costing about $625 million as of October 31, 2008. Seventy-one of the miles completed as of September 30, 2007, were pedestrian fencing completed at costs ranging from $400,000 to $4.8 million per mile and averaging $2.8 million per mile. CBP had also finished about 2 miles of vehicle fencing at a cost of $2.8 million. Pedestrian fencing accounted for 140 of the miles that CBP had completed as of October 31, 2008, with costs ranging from $400,000 to $15.1 million per mile for an average of $3.9 million per mile. Seventy-five of the miles were vehicle fencing and costs ranged from $200,000 to $1.8 million per mile, averaging $1.0 million per mile. The per mile costs to build the fencing varied considerably because of the type of fencing, topography, materials used, land acquisition costs, and labor costs, among other things.
For fiscal years 2006 through 2009, the SBI program received about $3.6 billion in appropriated funds. Of this amount, by late 2008 about $2.4 billion had been allocated to complete approximately 670 miles of vehicle and pedestrian fencing along the roughly 2,000 miles of border between the United States and Mexico. In March the Tactical Infrastructure / Border Fence Program was transferred to U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) Office of Finance, Facilities Management and Engineering (FM&E) from the Secure Border Initiative (SBI).
As of January 22, 2010, CBP had completed roughly 643.3 miles of fencing (344.8 miles of primary pedestrian fence and 298.5 miles of vehicle fence) along the Southwest Border. Generally speaking, pedestrian fence is located in urban areas and adjacent to ports of entry, whereas vehicle fence is located in relatively unpopulated and remote areas of the border. When finished, the Department will have constructed a total of approximately 670 miles of pedestrian and vehicle fence along the Southwest Border.

paying attention JD?

We need to control our border. I'll be honest, I don't know the best way to do it. A fence reminds me too much of East Germany, and there are enough reminders of East Germany in this country as it is.

iMO if we enforce the laws on the books, the border will police itself to a point. Not one candidate is for deporting every illegal in the country, but they are for creating NEW laws inspite of the fact they cant enforce the laws we have ... dumbshits.

Gingrich made a good point about employers using Vericheck ... if employers wont hire illegals the jobs dry up, the jobs dry up, the border traffic goes down condiderably, leaving the war on drugs

given our success on that lil ditty, a fence around the entire country would be next ... to no avail.

ergo

Enforce the damn laws in place and quit playing fucking politics at taxpayer expense.
