I went to Nuevo Laredo a few months back and it was OK. Gotta admit I was a little nervous but went with a friend who is familiar with the area.
Another friend of mine actually moved there a couple of months ago. He said cartel related crimes are not as bad as it used to be but the common thug crime is up. For example, car jackings or holdups have increased. He said these crimes are committed by thugs who claim to be with the Zeta's. BUT, the Zeta's are starting to kill the thugs. In fact, about a month ago, there were several dead thugs found on the street with signs on them stating they were not Zeta. Apparently the Zetas don't like it when someone claims to be one of them and isn't.
Ciuadad Acuņa is very quiet and with little spurts of crime here and there which has been the norm for years. No matter where you go - always be cognizant of your surroundings and remember to many -- you are indeed the ugly American who is there for one reason -- and that is to increase the bank accounts of The Lodge, Club Rio and other places ==> and to provide the young ladies there with money to help support them and their families. I American taxi over and Mexican taxi back across as I feel the days of safely "walking" across are long gone.
