A new executive order gives president new powers

It was just a few hours ago that someon on this site ask if Obama could become a dictator and now we get this executive order. Note that it was signed on Friday but only released late on Sunday.

Reading through this I can see where the authority for "national security and defense" needs is completely under White House control through the National Security Committee (all cabinet officials), the Homeland Security Agency, and the National Economic Council (section 104). This gives them control of resources (material, water, industrial, transportation) over the needs or wants of the private owners (section 801, A).
To put it plainly the White House is giving itself the authority to control constuction materials, transportation, water resources, food resources, industry in the event of a national security crisis which has not been defined. It is up to the POTUS to determine what a national security crisis is. The stage has been set.

I know some will disagree, but President Obama is a responsible President who would not abuse his powers.

On the other hand, President Bush did not even need this new law to virtually destroy the economy of this country with his idiotic policies and moronic wars and tax cuts for the rich for good measure.

When President Obama leaves office after his second term in 2017, you will see the Democratic candidates clamoring to get his endorsement and inviting him to their stage.

. . . Right now, you see the complete opposite behavior by all the GOP candidates in scurrying to get as far away from Bush as possible.

Funny how many dems are retiring and don't want Obama near them.

Have you read the executive order? What was your favorite part? Did you like the part about cars running on unicorn farts? Sorry, that was not in there.

I read the entire execurive order (EO). I spent many years as a member of the Defense Acquisition Corps, and this EO doesn't give me any kind of "ahaa" moment. It looks to me like it simply updates the previous EOs that implement the Defense Production Act of 1950. (Every contract I wrote had a priority code, as required by that law. There was one time that I had to get the Commerce Department's help to ensure a supplier provided parts for the F-16 ahead of parts for the Boeing 7XX. That is, supply national defense needs over the needs or wants of the private sector.) This EO brings in the Department of Homeland Security, which did not exist when the previous EOs were promulgated, and makes a few other organizational tweeks. It does not give the president new powers. All those powers were already given to him by the law.

Of course, I don't know for a fact, but I bet you do have a similar law in England. And you probably have a similar government order that provides the responsibilities of the different ministeries for enacting the law.

But put this all aside Barley. You are absolutely correct--this is the enxt step in Obama declairing himself President for Life. So you should probably flee the country right now, and take a few of your fellow posters with you please.

Someone said this occurs daily. Want to post a link to the last three in the last three days?

Answer this question; if these powers already belonged to the Oval office and there is nothing new here, what was the point of all the research that went into this executive order? Why was it written if it was completely unnecessary? Why was it signed on Friday but not released until Sunday? Answer these questions.

JD. don't worry about it. President Obama would NEVER violate anyone's rights. Really, he is an honest man, and cares for you. That NDAA and similar crap was just to keep Congress happy, by turning over their authority to him.

. . . . . . . . . . He'll never use it in a bad way, he will only use it against bad people.
