Buffalo vs Rochester

There has always been friendly rivalry between Buffalo and Rochester in the media and around here. Unfortunately, the truth is that both places are struggling. But if one wants to split hair about which place is in less trouble, the vital statistics suggest that Rochester has a slight edge in employment and safety.

I hope we can agree that both are nice places with nice people.
Buffalo is in worse shape than Rochester. It remains to be seen whether Governor Cuomo's pledge to invest $1 billion in economic incentives in Buffalo (and not other upstate cities) will materialize or will do any good.

I loved in Roch and canandaigua for most of the 80's and still visit often (Amber and other reasons). I really like it and the economy has generally been better. It was always harder to find good workers in roch than bufffalo. The politicians in roch seem to work better with each other. Buffalo and erie county is a political sesspool.
On the other hand, Socially Buffalo is better. I would say the people in Buffalo are MUCH friendlier, The restaurants are, taken as a whole, are better and the late night party scene is much better. Things have calmed down over the last 20 years or so but this place is still pretty wild. The sports scene in Buffalo is better and the fans seem much more knowledgeable WE have the added Bonus of having The falls and Canada within short driving distance.
I always thought of Roch as an "eastern" city. where Buffalo is a mix of Eastern and midwestern, but still having a personality all it's own. In my work, I run into people from all over the world and they generally LOVE Buffalo, despite of what they might have heard before they came.

Buffalo did not recover as well with the lose of steel and chem co's. Rochester seems to be doing better. X keeps hanging on. K is tanking slower than Bethlehem steel did in Buffalo.
