I don't know about "the best", but, with his cool piloting skills under tremendous pressure, he saved Gemini 8 from a thruster malfunction disaster and landed Apollo 11 manually in difficult terrain with fuel running out.

I guess that was back when it was OK to be a man, and men were men and the sheep were scarred..
