Is an "Asian Fantasy" racist?

You have probably seen the news about Victoria's Secret creating lingerie with a "Sexy Little Geisha" theme.

http://www.thedailybeast.com/article...roversies.html

A single blogger cried 'racist'...that was picked up by the feminists...and then by the general news sites. And Victoria's Secret pulled the line.

So my question is: if I have "Asian fantasies", does that make me racist? Can a man and his wife, non-asians, not pretend they are of some 'exotic' culture, no matter what it may be?

I think if I were an Asian woman, I would be thrilled and maybe take advantage of the "Asian mystique" that elevates my sexual attractiveness in the eyes of some with no effort on my part.

But maybe I would make a crappy Asian woman.

Unfortunately we do not have many Asian women who post here (hi Nikki!) to chime in with their view, but what do y'all think?

I don't think that a person of one race who desires or has fantasies about a person of a different race, is a racist. In fact it's nearly the opposite of being racist since you're accepting of someone of a different race. It's just that person's preference. I know that I in general like women not of my race and seek them out. But you never know what other people think or find offensive.

To illustrate, I recently did a double with my favorite AA provider and another local favorite of mine(not AA btw). In the course of the session, the AA lady ended up wearing a collar and chain leash. She's submissive and loves the submissive role. She and I both considered it as dom/sub play and nothing more, with no thought at all to racial overtones. To my surprise, after the session was over, the other girl expressed some concern that the AA was offended by the chain and collar.
Was I being racist? It certainly wasn't my intention (or her's), but I guess it could look that way to some people.
So to show that I wasn't a racist, I sugested that the next time we got together, she play my poor Latina maid LOL. I even offered to buy her a pair of huaraches for the role.
And the thought of FL as an asian woman is not something I can get my mind
around

Some people tend to be more sensitive of different things or even jealous. Lol I have no problem admitting I get jealous but I know why I do and therefore I keep myself I'm line. To be honest whoever cried racist on this is probably jealous and insecure. VS just wanted a theme and there should be nothing wrong with that!:-)

There are those who make it their life's work to be offended. They have no excitement in their lives so they take it upon themselves to create the excitement they crave.

I saw the outfit on the VS website before they pulled it. Racist? Ridiculous. They have had Asian costume outfits for years and there was never an issue raised about any of them.

What you saw was yet another example of making a mountain out of a molehill.

I could not agree more, FL.

"...with sites like Racialicious condemning the brand for stereotyping Asians as a Western sexual fantasy."

I read a few blogs off their website...they really need to get a life! God forbid that an Asian woman could be sexual and erotic...they say that like it's a bad thing!

It's very simple...level-headed people can distinguish the difference between REAL and FANTASY! Using a little more common sense and a whole lot less of these stuffy interest groups...like Racialicious...would help stop the insanity! These people, clearly, have HUGE chips on their shoulders!

I say...they need to get over it and go get laid...by a sexaul Asian Slutkitty, like moi!

Personally, I thinck a lot of people are just fuct in the head.. They're too busy mind-fucking everything. There's a difference between preference, discrimination, and racism and it would do a lot of people a lot of good to understand what they mean and what the differences are.

I’m not trying to deny that people have their own unique sexual desires and sources of pleasure. But like all things, sex and sexuality don’t live in a bubble. They intersect with our historical and cultural contexts. Donning a “sexy Geisha” outfit to get the ball rolling in the bedroom remains offensive because it confirms a paradigm in which Asian people and their culture can be modified and sexualized and appropriated for the benefit of the West.
"Sexualized and appropriated for the benefit of the West"?! Give me a break!

If I didn't find the author, Nina Jacinto, so repulsive, I'd offer her a better way to keep her mouth busy. And then she could accuse me of sexualizing and appropriating her for the benefit of the gringos!

"For benefit the West"

Interesting...

It appears that the East is very much into doing it for their own gratification, as my thread in the Sandbox clearly demonstrates...

rac·ism

/ˈreɪsɪzəm/ Show Spelled[rey-siz-uhm] Show IPA noun
1. a belief or doctrine that inherent differences among the various human races determine cultural or individual achievement, usually involving the idea that one's own race is superior and has the right to rule others.

2. a policy, system of government, etc., based upon or fostering such a doctrine; discrimination.

3. hatred or intolerance of another race or other races.

So, according to strict definition: Absolutely NOT!

This is actually the opposite: Racial Appreciation.

However, as many have pointed out there will always be haters out there. They will hate anything and everything. Misery loves company. So these miserable, jealous people just want to take away something intended to bring joy to others.

Appreciating an aspect of someone doesn't mean that that is all you appreciate about them. Some people, get pissed when a woman dresses sexy and immediately rant that makes her only value as a sex object. WTF??

1) What is wrong with a woman celebrating her sexuality. It is a gift from God to women (and one that fades at that) and to men as it is THE most beautiful thing he can EVER witness in this world (if he's lucky).

2) Assuming and publicly touting that that is her only value is just pure idiocy...
Because she put on a hot dress for a cocktail party she can't change the next morning and be a CFO in a power suit?? Or a Manhattan wedding planner?

In summary, as we all know: You can't cure Stupid!
Yellow fever! One person gets offended, another says "don't get offended." Both are wrong...I say, let the offended one be offended and voice his view, and let the non-offended one keep enjoying whatever brings him/her joy. In other words, the problem not whether someone is offended, or someone else believes it should not be offensive. The problem is when one or both sides tries to convince the other that they need to change!

Are you offended? I endorse your right and privilege to be upset. Are you not offended? I support your right and privilege to enjoy! Whichever side you may be on, it is not your job, or even your privilege, to try and change which side I am on...
