The world stopped getting warmer almost 16 years ago, according to new data released last week.

The figures, which have triggered debate among climate scientists, reveal that from the beginning of 1997 until August 2012, there was no discernible rise in aggregate global temperatures.

This means that the ‘plateau’ or ‘pause’ in global warming has now lasted for about the same time as the previous period when temperatures rose, 1980 to 1996. Before that, temperatures had been stable or declining for about 40 years.

The new data, compiled from more than 3,000 measuring points on land and sea, was issued quietly on the internet, without any media fanfare, and, until today, it has not been reported.

This stands in sharp contrast to the release of the previous figures six months ago, which went only to the end of 2010 – a very warm year.


Ending the data then means it is possible to show a slight warming trend since 1997, but 2011 and the first eight months of 2012 were much cooler, and thus this trend is erased.

Capitalism runs on fossil fuels. Just about every practical source of energy produces CO2 when it's burned. America needs to be able to use it's natural resources, without crippling regulations, designed to destroy capitalism.

Ekim, you seem to believe that the glaciers were ALWAYS there.

They USED to talk about the Viking settlements and dairy farms in Greenland in American history classes, in elementary, middle school, and high school.

The only problem is that you can't graze cattle on glaciers, so the glaciers MUST NOT HAVE BEEN THERE WHEN THE VIKINGS WERE.

In actual fact, the historical records from the Viking settlement times record the advancement of the glaciers. The Vikings eventually went back to Europe when the glaciers in Greenland came too far south.

This is why everyone who talks about "global warming" and the glaciers melting does not talk about the Viking settlements: they disprove the central thesis.

I don't think that the mammoths being dug up in Syberia were grazing on Glacier Grass.

I don't know what they were farting, but I doubt their expelled gas caused everything to freeze over, including themselves with undigested grass in their stomachs.

The earth has warmed and cooled countless times. It was doing it before there were humans on the planet. The fact that glaciers may be decreasing or increasing at any given time doesn't prove anything. Large portions of North America were covered with glaciers thousands of years ago; now they're gone. Humans didn't make them melt.

The issue is whether or not humans are contributing to global warming, and if so, by how much.
