Boehner Says it.........

I have a couple of big customers who have been holding off on any decisions regarding how they will handle Obamacare. Now that the election is over, I suspect some pretty big layoffs. I talked to a Port Captain today who is pretty worried. He has two strikes against him, he is close to 60, and has a high salary.

It's the law. We might as well get used to it and adapt as neccessary. We are meeting with our insurance agent next week to see just what course we will take.

We damned sure are not laying anybody off. We have way too much work, and good men are hard to come by. Of course, we don't have a lot of dead weight laying around like larger companies, so many of them will have to trim the fat, so to speak.

Doove, reality has set it.
We have bids out for our insurance package for the next three years. We are looking at no less than a 20 percent increase in our health insurance cost if we keep the same level of coverage.
That is about an increase of $50,000 in total cost, which will come directly out of ownerships pockets.

We will keep the same level of coverage. We can no more suddenly tell our men that we will drop their employ insurance package that we could tell them that they have to start buying their own tooling.

But from what I see, we will get better coverage, the big one being pre-existing conditions. Another is drug cost. That does take a big load off of several of our employs, who have familly members with severe cronic ailments.

The money out of my pocket does not seem to be a big price to pay when you look at the peace of mind, and security, it gives our employees.

Insurance goes up every year if you wish to maintain the same level of coverage.
The problem is before, through the competitiuve bidding proccess, that increas would be as little as 5 percent for a locked in three year package. Now, everybody is coming in with the same substantial increase.
One thing we have noticed is there is very little difference in the coverage from any of the companies we are dealing with. They are mandated by law to offer a certain level of insurance. This seems to be the justification for the higher increase.

What is the latest on the Opt Outs. Our Blue Cross rep says that all Opt Outs are temporary, that in the end, the entire Country will come under Obama Care. The Opt Outs were simply put into place to allow a smoother transision.

Obviously, he's decided to not Opt Out to retain his skilled labor. Sounds to me like he has some kind of machine shop. Letting skilled labor go, skilled labor that gets paid far more than unskilled labor, isn't like letting go unskilled labor. And that will happen in all the small, mid and even large companies all over the country. Those that can afford it least, the ones that can be easily replaced because of their skill sets or are in child bearing years, will suffer the most.

Insurance costs were rising yes, but not at the rate of 20%. I self insure. Even with a rate increase at my birthday and policy anniversary date, the rate increase isn't double digits let alone 20%.

Thank You Olivia.
Accountants look at the bottom line, they see only whays you can (legally) put more money in your pocket.

The opt out might look good on paper, just pay the fine and pocket the rest. Unfortunatally, it's not that simple.

In order to keep men in an industry such as what I am in, you have to offer a benefit package that is at the top of the ladder. These are men that you invest in with the hopes that they will be with you for the long term.

The biggest "product" we sell is labor. Expensive labor. You can not call up the labor pool every Monday Morning and ask for a crew if someone decides to walk out.. If we start with a young man out of High School, and train him, it will be three years down the line before we can begin reaping the benefits of his labor, and knowledge.

I do not expect those who do not have to go through the every day mechanics of making a business run to understand that employing people is more than simply giving them a paycheck.

My accountant has reviewed this thouroughly, and in his opinion, we might be able to recoup as much as 60 percent of our health care cost through the various tax encentives and rebates that the government is offerring for the sole purpose of allowing businesses under 25 employs to furnish Health Care and not go broke doing it. At this time, our group policy is costing me about 120,000 a year. Now, in the grand scheme of things, that might not be much, but if I could recoup 60 percent, that is money in my pocket.

Where is the downside? Of course, it will be a subsidy, but I don't make the rules. Originally Posted by Jackie S
