I realize providers get verified with reveiws, how do hobbiest get references ? Just by seeing providers and writing reviews ?

Basically. Joining a site such as http://www.preferred411.com/ and getting OK's there can also help.

P411 is the easiest route , but seeing a couple newbie friendly providers , then seeing more prominent verified providers , is another option . There are lots of providers that are very respected , and those are good ones to see and have as refs !
