CLEVELAND (AP) — The man who famously put down his Big Mac to help rescue three women held captive for a decade in an Ohio house will never have to pay for another burger in his hometown.
Charles Ramsey has been promised free burgers for life at more than a dozen Cleveland-area restaurants.
The (Cleveland) Plain Dealer (http://bit.ly/10SPuf4 ) reports that the restaurant where Ramsey worked as a dishwasher initially created a special burger in his honor, but eateries in the city decided a larger tribute was due.
Ramsey was called a hero after helping Amanda Berry, Gina DeJesus and Michelle Knight break out of the house May 6. Ariel Castro is now facing charges.
The newspaper says Ramsey was traveling and would get his "Chuck Card" when he returns.

Is this stereotyping? Or is it just me overreacting?

Charles Ramsey, who appears to be a black man, is credited with “’famously’ put [ting] down his Big Mac to help rescue three women…”. Is the dumbing down of America so prevalent and ubiquitous that this is the “hook” of the story?

Gee, that would be a tough decision to many, especially a black man, to either continue eating a Big Mac or come to the aid of people in a dire situation!

Any thoughts?

I laughed my ass off when he said he knew something was wrong when a pretty white girl was running toward a black man. Guess he stereotyped himself.

There are tons of white women dating black guys around here.
I like black women.

I think he is going on the story that was told "I put down my big mac to ...."

What he said about the white woman running into his arms just shows he would have been surprised by any woman of any color running into his arms. He would have just stated it differently.

He was trying to be funny now that all the attention is on him.
Everyone laughs at the black guy making a stupid joke because he is black.
Anyone else and they would giggle a little and move away from him or call him racist.

It's really not all that impressive a rescue. They were captive for ten years. I went by a friends' house last night while she wasn't home and BOTH her neighbors called her cell asking if she was okay, there's a strange car in the driveway. I despise that type of compulsive busy-body nosiness, yet over the course of a decade you might notice a rape camp next door, as it doesn't sound like the perp was all that careful.

To second the OP's assessment, the standards are pretty low these days. Shit if you just answer phone calls in a uniform you're a freedom-saving hero that should get free healthcare forever, discounts at most businesses and top priority in the job market. Standards are whacked.

The guy is no hero, but he speaks the truth. And the more truth he spoke, the more he was edited. Some truths are bad for ratings.

Yes but she ran into Ramsey's arms and he contacted the police.

Franckie, I was not picking at you. I still have a real hard time wrapping my mind around that whole situation. I cannot understand how the neighbors could not have heard a damn thing over ten years. I just hope those three turds learn some painful realities in prison.

Those three women are going to be fucked up in their heads until they die and then into the afterlife due to those turds.

Plus, he turned down the award money. He said to give it to the girls instead. He is not expecting any kind of handout at all.

I think the criticism of him is way overboard, and one wonders whether said criticism is motivated by stereotypes and bigotry.
