Question for photographers in upstate

JohnnyCap's Avatar
Anywhere in upstate, have any of our photographer board members paid models for their time? What is a reasonable rate in this area? Was that rate for a PG style shoot, nude, spread nude, or xxx?

I did this some in FL and found rates could very tremendously. Some photographers can get free work for prints, some divas won't let you take a toe shot for less than $100 an hour, 2 hour minimum.

I know this varies with talent, I'm wondering if anyone can put a frame of reference on local talent cost.

What are you having them model?

Do you just want to work on your portfolio?

What type of model?

Or do you just want to take pictures of pretty girls?

I am a GWC, Guy With Camera and I dont pretend to be a pro. I am very up front about that and thats why I sometimes offer to pay for nudes. I take nudes and fetish shots, yes, slowly trying to build a portfolio but it isn't often I get a shot I really like. I have fun with it though.

I work with a few pa guys on it but took my profile down a few months ago because too many wanted to barter.

If I have a say in the shoot (he takes pics i ask him to for advertising), I get a copy of all the pics on a flash drive (he gives me), and if its whenever I chose (not interfering with my work) I'll do it for wine (to relax me haha) and 60 h.
If it's sexual or with a session I get a copy of all pics, no face pics, and it's my donation per hour plus 60.

I am a commercial photographer and i've done a lot of providers images. I also have done a ton of portfolio work for models. I don't pay models ...ever. I am willing to do TF (time for print,CD) but that's rare and I have worked for trade with a few providers. If you're serious about doing images then study the craft, invest in some decent equipment, study the craft, practice, study the craft.... you get the drift. There are a LOT of free sites full of info on becoming a better photographer. Websites with tips on how to pose models etc, etc. Look at model sites like Model Mayhem, One Model Place, Muse Cube and any number of others. Most of them have contests for "Image of the day" Look those over and see what is popular. Practice, study....

Now when you are looking for models, first don't be a creep! There are a lot of legit models that do nude and fetish stuff that you will have to pay to build your portfolio. If your images are good you can offer to do TF shots to newer models to build their portfolio.

There are a million creeps with cameras and the models get bombarded constantly with BS offers so you have to set yourself apart from them. Next don't limit yourself to models. It's really a beautiful world and you can get some breathtaking images if you just learn to see. .......have fun. BD

But.....
I'm somewhere in between GWC and a professional like yourself.
I consider myself an amateur accomplished photographer who does photography as a "hobby" ( Although I do make a little cash doing it).
I have a nice camera, backdrops, lights and a great imagination......
But I certainly don't make a living doing it.....
I'm smart enough to know how big of an investment of time and equipment it would take to doing it professionally. No thanks on that!!!
Having said all of that.... I do have plenty of recommendations from the girls that I have photographed.

And to answer your question JC.... I have found that many providers and strippers are more than willing to pose if you give them prints and or CD's of the pictures.
One thing I will tell you.... never share the pics with anyone unless you have the girls permission. That is a big NO NO.
Good luck.

Its been a hobby of mine since before I got a quality Nikon 4 years ago. I am very up front that I'm just doing it for fun, I offer a contract not to publish, yet sometimes it still comes across creepy I fear. Maybe it's my avatar. But I have no interest in sitting at a computer doctoring images, thus no professional aspirations. No offense to BD or the pros, but I have far more respect for real film in terms of an art form.

But it's an insane market between photographers and subjects, and this short thread shows it. On one hand, you have a professional photographer that never pays, on the other a model/subject that asks a decent fee when she's calling the shots.

Thanks for the posts, I'm happy to hear more.
ive been asked a couple of questions about my boat pics...while were on the subject of pictures and while this is a bit off the subject I just wanted to clarify my boat pics... those were taken by a friend...not xy and not xys boat

It didn't occur to me I was blowing serious smoke up some old time Rochester ass when I said that. I do believe, like vinyl, film will stick around. Non-digital forms of communication may one day be key to society.
