Homework

So I am writing an essay on Acceptance.
Everyone defines it differently I would love ya'lls input. What does it mean to you? How do you find it? How do you respond when it's not given or received?

To me Acceptence is when something unpredictable happens instead of complaining about it and over thinking it we chose to live with it. That we chose not to judge what is happening instead we believe everything happens for a reason and there is a positive side to it that we keep going on strong. This to me is Acceptence

Thank you so much for your help loves!!!!

Tori,

I would add that there is a positive and negative side. Kind of the Ying Yang theory. Regardless, we choose not to judge.

Acceptance to me is the ability to express myself and my ideas where my peers and superiors listen.
Being accepted changes as we grow up in life.

I've seen how you write. Work that into one of those missives and I'm sure it will be an attention getter.

Acceptance doesn't have to be something unpredictable that you deal with. It can be something you seek with respect to a certain set if circumstances, such as friendship or social proof. It can be conformity. It can be a promise for a promise in the contractual sense, an agreement, or quid pro quo in the same sense. Acceptance can be objective--I hold up a wrench at the local hardware store where I have an account, the clerk who knows me gives a wave, I walk out the door and he charges my account. It can be subjective--I'm not offended by a certain thing, but everyone else dislikes it. It can be forgiveness without approval, or a philosophy--Confucianism perhaps. It can be gradual change or mediation to a conclusion that resolves a situation, though neither party is really happy. It can be tolerance or a failure to condemn others in the face of clear wrong. (Whole wars have marked that one.) Or it can be surrender.

Or write about it from an angle--what some would call 'outside the box.' To paraphrase, "You have to be taught hate and fear, you have to be carefully taught, you have to be carefully taught." ( Lt. Cable, Rogers and Hammerstein's South Pacific.) In other words something may be perfectly acceptable, but defined by others to be wrong or unacceptable based upon their own place, reference points, experiences, culture or history. You accept it, they don't, so do you conform to their point of view--accept it? Is it the same thing? If you go with the flow and don't challenge it, though not conceding it, then haven't you accepted it, Weed Hopper?

Or it can be the receipt of a gift.
I think a lot of the time acceptance is confused with tolerance, or vice versa. Tolerance is merely not doing anything about your dismay for the situation, like not yelling at a group of teenagers being jack asses during a movie. Acceptance requires understanding.

This is an interesting and intriguing homework assignment.

As you know, there are several definitions of the word acceptance that include legal references, religious references and common sense, and each has its own merits for certain situations.

To me acceptance is a state of mind, somewhat synonymous with belief or faith in something or someone. I see it as opening one’s mind to the reality of a situation, condition, circumstance or even a person, without attempting to modify it.

Often times it is difficult for us as humans to accept situations that we find uncomfortable or people we see as objectionable and as a result, we attempt to change the circumstance or person to meet our need for comfort or to match our beliefs. There are times when we succeed, but probably more where we don’t.

If I truly believe in acceptance as a state of mind, i.e., having an open mind, and I accept you as a friend, I should be willing to forego trying to change things about you that I don’t care for as much. I should not only accept you for who you are and what you represent without trying to change you, but also learn to enjoy the differences between us.

The same might be said of a situation or circumstance that I might want to change but have no ability to change.

This may have oversimplified a summary of what you were hoping to see.

Having said that, a future tutoring session definitely will require your school girl outfit!
When you reach acceptance you've become at peace with the decision/outcome. IMHO

I hope your professor allows you to pick the definition you want to go with. Or you can pick regardless the preference of your professor and they'll have to make the choice whether to 'accept' your decision.
I think of acceptance as one of the stages of grief. But just as easily, it could be demonstrated when I went with my friend to the KC Pride Festival his first year 'out' because no matter his sexual orientation, he is my friend.
