Part of the answer might be "the liberals ruined it", but a second part is "the conservatives held on too long to the parts that became obsolete".

Bankers and multi-national corporations. They serve no ideology. They pull the strings on left and right to give the illusion of conflict and choice, but it is only an illusion.

When our government started ignoring the Constitution because it was too restrictive is when the demise started. The Constitution was purposely written to limit government, not to limit the people.
