I think the sunset clause is a good idea. It will force politicians to address an issue which they appear unwilling to do. Doing nothing rarely makes a problem go away, and usually makes it worse.

It means that the program ends when that time is reached only if the program is not renewed by Congress prior to the sunset. I see no real issue with this for Federal programs in general. How many “temporary” programs are still ongoing? Just an example, one of the many small fees that are charged by cell phone companies is the result of a “temporary” tax program passed in 1898 to fund the Spanish-American War.

I'm aware of what a sunset provision is. You can apply it to a whole host of programs of low priority and I'm going to support it because in many cases it's going to be ok if Congress fails to act. I don't support it for these programs. And neither do most Americans.

They need stability in these programs and measured change, not periodic manufactured chaos. Nor an automatic 5 year rubber stamp. But if you can't see the debt limit shenanigans or groups of hyperpartisan ideologues driving to the brink of sunset beyond you're burying your head in the sand.
