Common sense and decency prevails. What a great way to end 'pride' month.

He changed the name of a ship from a fucking pillowbiter to the name of a medal of honor winner.

He said something like "now we are removing politics from the naming of Navy ships"

(not an exact quote)

Whatta fucking joke.

This is nothing but politics.

Well...I suppose what it REALLY is...is playing to his fucking boss and his made-up culture war horseshit....

But it is still political. In the very worst sense.

What a huge blessing! Thank you drunk inept Hegs! With all of the shit going on in this country, thank goodness a name of a fucking ship had its name changed to make some (not all) of the miserable hateful MAGA simpletons happy by throwing them a hollow bone to feed their bigotry.

Dan White didn't kill Milk over his being gay. he meant to kill mayor Moscone for changing his mind about re-appointing White after he resigned. White did clash with Milk but Milk was simply in the wrong place at the wrong time. White had already shot Moscone when he encountered Milk.

Milk did nothing worthy of having a Navy ship named after him. maybe a tugboat in San Fran harbor but not a Navy vessel even a non-combat supply ship.

According to this website roughly 6% of the military are lgbt. Or about 71000 individuals. Wikipedia shows that 9.3% of adult Americans identified as LGBTQ+ or about 32 million people.

Do you really think it’s a good idea to disparage such a large percentage of our population?

In a health survey released this week by the RAND Corporation, 6.1 percent of people in the U.S. military self-identified as LGBT . It’s the first ever direct estimate of the military’s LGBT population, even though LGB people, at least, have been allowed to serve openly for seven whole years.

The demographics of sexual orientation and gender identity in the United States have been studied in the social sciences in recent decades. A 2025 Gallup poll concluded that 9.3% of adult Americans identified as LGBTQ+.

For extraordinary courage and conspicuous heroism above and beyond the call of duty while in charge of a repair party during an attack on the U.S.S. Neosho by enemy Japanese aerial forces on 7 May 1942. Lacking assistance because of injuries to the other members of his repair party and severely wounded himself, Peterson, with no concern for his own life, closed the bulkhead stop valves and in so doing received additional burns which resulted in his death. His spirit of self-sacrifice and loyalty, characteristic of a fine seaman, was in keeping with the highest traditions of the U.S. Naval Service. He gallantly gave his life in the service of his country.

this gets you the Medal of Honor and a ship named for you. just being gay does not.

Thanks for the stats, txdot. There are over 280 ships in the navy https://www.navy.com/vessels. That one ship represents 0.36% out of 280. Assuming txdot's stats are correct and 6.1% of the military identifies as LGBT, I believe a boat named after some well-known gay midshipman I've never heard of should be left as is solely due to that 6.1%. But whatever, it's not like I am going to lose any sleep over it either way.

Edit: It will be funny if the ship's name is changed back when the Trump MAGA reality shit show is officially cancelled for good in 2028.

This isn’t just about Harvey Milk. The fact is that they are going to be renaming other vessels named after other civil rights leaders. What it comes down to is the fact that they think it’s ok to disrespect large swaths of the public because they think that they are not worthy of respect.

https://www.cbsnews.com/news/navy-ne...ights-leaders/

The documents obtained by CBS News also show other vessels named after prominent leaders are also on the Navy's renaming "recommended list."

Among them are the USNS Thurgood Marshall, USNS Ruth Bader Ginsburg, USNS Harriet Tubman, USNS Dolores Huerta, USNS Lucy Stone, USNS Cesar Chavez and USNS Medgar Evers.

CBS News found that a December 2024 web article from Naval Sea Systems Command about the laying of the keel for the future USNS Thurgood Marshall has been deleted.

P.S. From some of the homophobic comments in this thread I can say for certain that it is about his being gay.
