Costco sues Trump administration for tariffs

Per Costco lawsuit, only Congress has the authority to enact tariffs.

Supreme Court decision expected next year.

How many forum Republicans believe Trump has the power to enact tariffs ?

Yes, Congress has delegated some of its tariff authority to the president through various laws, but this power is not absolute and is subject to debate and legal challenges. Congress has delegated this authority to address specific issues like national security, unfair trade practices, or economic emergencies, but it has done so with specific limitations, such as those in the Trade Expansion Act of 1962 or the Trade Act of 1974. The extent to which the president can use this delegated power is a subject of ongoing debate, especially when a president's actions appear to go beyond the specific conditions outlined by Congress

your claim is proven false. were these presidents also "illegally" imposing tariffs?

Many U.S. presidents have used tariffs, including George Washington who signed the first tariff law in 1789, William McKinley and Herbert Hoover who signed major tariff acts, and modern presidents like George W. Bush, Ronald Reagan, and Donald Trump who have imposed tariffs on specific goods or for broader economic goals. Tariffs have been used to raise revenue, protect domestic industries, and as a tool in international trade disputes.

Notable examples

  • George Washington:
Signed the first major tariff law in the United States in 1789, setting an average 5% tariff rate on most imported goods to generate revenue.
  • William McKinley:
Implemented the McKinley Tariff of 1890, which significantly raised duties on imported goods.
  • Herbert Hoover:
Signed the Smoot-Hawley Tariff Act of 1930, which drastically increased tariffs on over 20,000 imported goods in an attempt to protect American industries during the Great Depression.
  • Richard Nixon:
Imposed a 10% tariff on all imports as a temporary measure to protect the value of the U.S. dollar.
  • George W. Bush:
Imposed tariffs of up to 30% on steel imports in 2002 to protect the domestic steel industry.
  • Donald Trump:
Used tariffs extensively, including imposing a 25% tariff on steel and 10% on aluminum on many trading partners and applying tariffs on imports from China.

Trump has gone far beyond any other president The Supreme Court decision will be interesting.

The sad part is Trump thinks China and other countries are paying the tariffs. The reality is American people and businesses are paying them. I don't know why reporters don't pursue this point.

Trump doesn't think so.

Trump may have overstepped his authority, or given improper reasons why he is able to proceed like he has.

The Supreme Court will weigh in.

So many businesses have suffered because of the tariffs.

And the world has suffered because WE put this blithering blowhard back in power with no guardrails.

He may only have three years left (I still don’t think he’ll last one), but the damage inflicted to our infrastructure by his tarriff game will take decades to repair.
