Perhaps better described as a Super Cruiser, or perhaps a Light Battleship.
The Iowa Class Battle ships were 58 thous tons displacement.
However, that is not needed as the 16 inch guns are not needed when missiles can be thrown with more effective damage.

I note that the Ticonderoga class Cruisers are the current "heavy" throwers of nifty weapons, and have not been built since 1994 with several already retired.

how do we know this won't be another boondoggle like the Zumwalt-class destroyers?

and is this the right platform to counter China in the South and East China Seas, and the Taiwan Strait, where the next real naval action will be?

these beasts are anything but invisible, that much is for damn sure..

isn't there a good reason we haven't built any battleships since WWII?

i don't pretend to be an expert on the subject, but maybe some actual experts can weigh in if this is a good use of limited military funds. to me, it seems like low radar profile motherships for autonomous naval drone boats, including drone subs, are the wave of the future, based on the action in the Black Sea between Ukraine and Russia. that seems like a cheaper way to neutralize amphibious assault ships that China will need to take Taiwan than building these huge Trumpian-style monsters..

and how much of this concept is driven by Trump wanting his name on something big rather than the actual needs of the U.S. Navy..

edit: yes UC i read the article. i'm not saying i know this is a dumb idea. my point is given what i know about Trump, i have concerns about this program. what are we giving up by going this direction? and what about instead improving our subs, which is a key area for superiority in any conflict with China?

Can carry 3 x the fire power of the old Ticos.
Did you read the article?
Just one of these along with a few Burke's can throw as much firepower as a carrier fleet.
Current warfare with the various numerous types of missiles does not need an aircraft carrier.
.. ... Surely seem to be a GREAT idea to me! ... AWESOME! ...

I’m sure that these ships were on the drawing board well before Trump was elected. I would say however that building a fleet of new ships is just the thing that would feed Trump’s monstrous ego.

Which means that the project was much more likely to be approved and funded than if it were done under another administration.

And of course the class of ship was named after Trump. The relevant question is did the navy choose the name to flatter the president and get him on their side or did Trump choose to use his own name because he is just incapable of not doing so?

Naval warfare is outdated. If this new Golden Fleet boat is “100 times more powerful” than current fleet, it’s still an oceangoing vessel. Meaning slow.

Yet another Trump jerkoff.

They do look somewhat like a TACO though…

Maybe they'll paint it orange.

The entire Little Crappy Ships program has cost an estimated $22 billion.

The Zumwalt program has cost an estimated $24.5 billion.

Trump class is a placeholder. The class of vessel will carry the first laid down and launched. If it’s named Constitution for example, the class will be called the Constitution class.

It’s unlikely these ships will ever see water as currently specced.

We will be fighting the Chicoms with what we have. (Which ain’t much)

The first Trump class battleship will have a fitting strong America's First name and it also represents the great American Patriot that is President Donald J. Trump.
