That is quite a dilemma, ain't it?

I ALWAYS return my cart and grab any other ones on the way.

But that's just me...

Actually, there is self-interest involved. If I leave it close to my vehicle, a slight incline and/or wind could cause it to run into my vehicle causing minor damage.

If I leave it almost anywhere else I could cause perceived or real inconvenience to someone else (eg, blocking a vehicle), which could lead to an altercation.

So, it’s not altogether altruistic.

Sometimes it depends on how far the carts corral is from where I parked and on the weather.

If it's raining cats and dogs, I just want to get in my car and go!

That guy has waay too much free time.

In this day and time, he is liable to get assaulted or shot for doing that, going around telling folks to put the shopping cart in the corral.
I usually look to see if someone (almost always female) is about to return one as soon as I park and offer to take it for them. In 30 years or so of doing this it has led to countless comments of appreciation, 3 or 4 friendships that developed when seeing that person later (usually at a school function) and they remembered me, and twice full on dates.

return it back to the store after taking it back to their nearby apt or home?

return it back to the cart collection point?

return it to the factory where it was made?

sometimes, we dont have to follow all the "rules", nor does it "predict" if someone is good or bad.
sounds kinda like andy rooney back in the day...
