Facebook...?

Durango95, I understand they can link your email with your Facebook. That's why my Facebook is linked to my email that ONLY my family and friends have. There are zero.. repeat, ZERO links between the hobby and my FB page. None. Zilch. Zip. Nada. I don't use it to advertise, I use it to say hi to Grandma at Christmas LOL

I'm not getting friend requests...let me clarify. There are "friend suggestions" that Facebook makes. "People You Might Know" is the header, I believe. It just suggests friends to me out of the blue, and there are six or seven hobbyists that I recognized their picture.

I'm not concerned about them knowing who I am since there are no pictures of me, I just found it really disturbing that Facebook is like, psychic or something.

I have seen people who I had remote contact with come up under the "suggested friends" section as well. I have no idea how they make the connection. It is pretty damn annoying. Some have been providers personal accounts as well. and if it shows up on my end it damn well is showing up on their end. I don't keep my picture on my profile page so unless they already know my real first and last name no one can make the connection by seeing my mug.

If you use the same computer/device for both they can read all of your address/phone books. They do keep track of address and of course those distasteful cookies will let them know its the same machine signing into each account.

The biggest thing none of us can control. Mistakes by other people mixing both worlds. That can catch up with any and all of us.

Does it make a difference if you keep the hobby contacts "in the cloud"? For example, all my hobby contacts are in my Hotmail account. I don't save anything on my computer (I am diligent about clearing cookies, too). I used Private browser settings when I accessed my FB account, and I only allowed it to look at my Hotmail account when searching for friends.

I don't know if any of this made a difference for me, but I didn't uncover any "blurring" of my two worlds. Just curious if my particular situation may have protected me in a way that might be of benefit to others that are more willing to take the risk.

I have a hobby Facebook under a stage name which i use to keep in touch with my ATF's,
I think it only works if you've been established(seen the provider more than once) with the provider and have a good repertoire(trust is a big deal) between each other.

One big thing. If you at any point gave a lady or hobbyist your non hobby phone, and you ever use that phone to check Facebook, you just gave them a link. If they know your real name and check your profile, Facebook has a link. If you looked up someone's real name, Facebook has a link. If you have hobby friends who are also Facebook friends, and they ever did any of these things, you have a link. In short, I guarantee you that if you are seeing people whose only connection is the hobby you messed up somewhere at some point. Facebook is not pulling these suggestions out of their ass.

And we won't even get in to the tracking of which sites you visit.

Facebook is a terrible idea when talking about the hobby.
