Yes the closer the better, but it can go up to 7 yards. Its designed for close up shooting indeed. But the fact it fits like a phone makes it a good concealed piece. For more distance and power my Beretta PX4 Storm. Can still conceal it, but its bulkier. But my ATFs are my shotguns and ARs

380 is a good choice for very close range like from your car seat to the window. The shot to the face will make them back up a bit.

Yep, just talk to any good gun smith about working on the S&W autos.
