I had the ill fortune of being in a poverty ridden area a few years ago when an epidemic of a life threatening disease broke out. Presto! Lots of health providers and equipment showed up. I would not cause the disease a "success", but something that needed to be erradicated.

Speaking of malaria flaring up again. We were making real progress controlling malaria in third world countries by using DDT to kill mosquitos. Then the loony left put restrictions on DDT making it's use impossible. As a result, millions have died from malaria that could have been saved.
