At MOST colleges, the football programs do not turn a profit either. The majority of the funding comes from student fees.
I get tired of watching the games and the announcers keep referring to how young the team is. They are young yes but so is Kentucky, Duke and most top 10 teams. I wasn't aware Shake had a 7 year guaranteed contract either...not like he's on the hot seat...just saying. You can see how empty it is on tv and they are trying to hide it. This year Duke got the 1st, 4th, 12th, and 18th ranked players out of HS. Kentucky got the 7th, 8th, 11th, 17th and 28th best players out of HS. Texas got the 19th (Allen) 33rd ( Jones) and 61st (Banks). Now HS rankings don't always mean college greatness but there is a strong correlation. Duke, in addition to its younger players, has 2 starters who are All American upperclassmen. And a soph who is an All American. So Duke is young but loaded with experienced talent. Texas lost all 5 starters from last year. Hopefully they will mature. Hopefully Allen will hang around.
