Chiefs Hold Indy to 19 Points, Lose Anyway

Gryphon's Avatar
While I can't say I really expected a win in Indianapolis yesterday, the Chiefs' performance against San Francisco had me hoping.

The Good
Romeo Crennel's defense--holding the Colts to 19 points at home in a game that meant much more to Indy than to KC is a major accomplishment. The disgusted expression on Manning's face every time he came off the field was priceless. This secondary may end up being better than Lewis-Ross-Cherry-Burress. Pity it was wasted.

The Bad
Dwayne Bowe--lacks the primary requirement for a receiver: the ability to catch the damn ball!

Matt Cassel--Did Josh McDaniel really want this guy in Denver? And had to settle for Kyle Orton? Really?

The Ugly
Todd Haley's gambles--Look, I'm not really criticizing here. I like the fact that Haley coaches to win the game, not just delay losing (Herm Edwards, anyone?). When Sean Payton started the second half of the Super Bowl with an onside kick, it was brilliant, gutsy, creative, and thrilling. Why? It worked. I want Haley to take gambles occasionally, especially in games the Chiefs aren't supposed to win. I just want better execution.
Okay where to start and not be critical....
Josh Freeman...qb for tampa bay born and raised in Grandview...went to K-State
You mean Josh McDaniel....and settleing for Kyle Orton isnt so bad he only leads the league in passing yards and is on pace to break Marinos record

+1 forever.
I do not like Todd Haley and I think that him being Head Coach is a big mistake. I know people say that he won 4 games last year but 3 of those wins should not have happened it was all luck and no skill on the part of the Chiefs. Who in their right mind would do an onside kick like that? Gambling is ok and all but that was just a down right horrible gamble with a horrible execution. At least maybe that knuckle head has learned the following after their loss to the Colts:

1. Get Cassel out of there he is a no talent hack and a waste of money.

2. Defense alone cannot win every football game. We have a great defense this year and he has relied to heavily on them for 3 out of 4 of their wins.

3. Institute a fine for every ball the Bowe drops.

4. Institute a fine for every time Cassel throws a pass to Bowe.

Well, the defense has sold me that they are going to be a solid performer and will keep us in games. The offense, lacks both wide receivers and a quarterback to get them the ball.

As far as overpaid? Actually his salary ranks him right in middle of league, probably an accurate salary, he is a middle of the road QB in NFL. Only Manning and Brady have thrown fewer INT's. As far as fines for throwing to Bowe...again, who else do you go to? He is our starting WR, if he is open, throw it to him. Obviously, huge weakness catching football, but what WR on Chefs should he be throwing to? I guess I have soft spot for receivers with great size and speed and who dropped a few catchable balls....same thing was said of me a few years ago. lol

BTW, as far as onside kick....yes gamble, you don't always win, that is why they are gambles. But Manning leads league in opening drives for scores, so as a percentage play, it actually was not that much of gamble, we gave up 3....I'll take those odds everytime.

Chefs played a very good team at home, made several misstakes and still had chance to win in 4th quarter, defense was stellar, we play as we did Sunday and we will be in playoffs.

However, this makes two games in a row that an onside kick has failed, both times because Succop didn't hit it properly. That's not entirely his fault; he's a second year player and we're talking about a finesse type of kick that isn't used very often. But I hope not to see that particular play used as a surprise gamble again this season.

Also you need to consider the game that they won only by field goals. Yes, Cassel got them close enough but he couldn't complete the job. I don't know who else to throw too but Bowe drops way to many easy passes and yes he has caught some hard ones but he as inconsistent a WR as Cassel is a QB. I would agree with the one-side kick only if the gamble was need but opening kick in the opening half it was not needed. Personally I do not even agree with the on-side kick I would like them abolish it.

I am sorry to rant I have a soft spot for Thigpen like you have a soft spot for WR. Thigpen was mistreated by the Chiefs esp. considering the fact that he had to take over as starting QB when he was 3rd sting a couple of seasons ago. Although they only won two games you can blame a lot of it on the defense at that time. Now if Thigpen had the defense we have now it would be very different.

we lost but we did hold manning very well. He didnt score one point. The only TD they got was a rushing one. We Scaked him twice. cause him to fumble one which he has not done since 2007 and we intercepted him once.... So I was very happy with the D and the way they played.. Bowe..... ugggg 3 dropped passes.. just made me sick. I like the fact they are taking chances even though they didnt work its nice to seem them playing to try to win. I wanted to them win but wasnt mad they lost. I still think charles needs to be played more.
I am sorry to laugh at the Tyler "cant take a snap under center" Thigpen people...he was traded away because he isnt capable of being a starting nfl qb...he is the 3rd string qb in miami...he isnt even capable of beating out Chad Pennington who has suffered numerous seperated shoulders...The only way he gets in a game in Miami is if both the starter and backup are injured...

Cassell, is not an avg QB, he throws behind receivers, does not have the arm strength to throw across the field. His passes float. He is the best we got this year, but the chiefs need to begin thinking about a real QB for the future. The entire WR core needs to be upgraded. Bowe is not a #1 receiver, at best he is a 2. His problem is he wants to run and does not look the ball into his hands. LACK of CONCENTRATION. Maybe next year we can find a few receivers in FA and through the draft.
as far as who to throw to in no paticular order charles, mccluster, moeaki, chamb ers, horne, battle, jones, hell with his running and catching skills try arenas, anyone but dwayne "roberto duran" bowe...see if anyone gets that reference....as far as cassel I am still wanting to give him a chance but I am really getting impatient...and since the line has gotten better I am ready to see if Brodie can stay healthy...he has a rocket launcher arm...and without LJ to way him down he might be able to get it done....
dirty dog's Avatar
I think Moeaki is going to be a stud and make us forget TG. I like McCluster and Charles but for those short dunks to the RB's to work the defense must believe you have the ability to go deep or the safetys and corners will cheat up and close off those passes to the RB's, I like Chambers but his best years are behind him and he is nothing now but a 3rd down receiver. Copper, Horne and the rest are either below ave or projects and that is exactly what the chiefs dont need. They need some proven college or FA receivers. I like Crowel and it would be fine with me if he were to get some starts.

Lol "Roberto Duran", I use that line alot, sure I'm not the only one who remembers hands of stone. lol.

Thigpen? Again, not on team. And as stated, he is 3rd string now for a team with shitty QB's.... I wish we had TB or Peyton, but we don't. Sorry I trust the observations of talent of haley and Peoli. I personally like Brodie and his arm much more, but I am impressed with the decisions of the the two afore mentioned fellas, so i will defer to their judgement of the best QB to win games for chefs this year.

Can't believe I'm sticking up for Cassell, I'm really not a fan of his...but the questions always is when people want someone fired...OK, then who do you have that is better to replace him? Until you have a better answer...you dance with the girl who brought ya...even if she is an ugly skank. lol
